Join AHS as a Laboratory Scientist I in the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) program, where your expertise and research will directly influence the safety and quality of care in diverse healthcare settings across the province of Alberta. This unique opportunity allows you to lead a dedicated microbiology laboratory and plan, execute, and report on complex microbiology projects, including outbreak investigations, environmental assessments, and evaluations of innovative and emerging medical products and equipment. You’ll work with a diverse number of health care professionals with expertise in IPC, microbiology and epidemiology. You’ll collaborate closely with IPC leadership and physicians to drive research, innovation, quality and patient safety forward. Physically located at the University of Calgary, on the Foothills Medical Centre campus, your work will complement clinical laboratory services, focusing on assessing and identifying infection risks, evaluating medical devices, innovative, and emerging technologies and enhancing patient safety. Success in this role requires advanced competencies in conventional clinical and molecular microbiological techniques, project management, data analysis, and scientific/technical report writing and communication through publications and presentations with consequent knowledge transfer. Description As a Laboratory Scientist I, you will perform work involving laboratory processes including research and development, test method implementation and change, routine testing as well as clinical trials. In addition, you will collect background information including literature reviews, analyze data, and prepare research proposals and summary reports. Additional Required Qualifications Bachelor of Science in microbiology, molecular biology, biotechnology, molecular genetics, or other related field. Various BSc degrees will be accepted as equivalent to the required BSc(H) in Medical Laboratory Science degree. Minimum MSc in microbiology, medical laboratory science, molecular biology, biotechnology, molecular genetics, or a related discipline. A minimum of 3 years worked experience in a clinical or research microbiology lab. Preferred Qualifications Certificate from Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science and/or MLT. Experience in reading/interpreting micro plates, molecular biology techniques (ex‑nucleic acid extraction, PCR, genotyping, sequencing), and analytical software. Skilled with lab equipment: pipettes, thermal cyclers, microscopes, electrophoresis equipment, DNA/RNA sequencers, Next Gen Sequencing, and other lab tools. Exceptional verbal/written communication skills (focused on scientific/technical writing).
