OverviewSystem Software Engineer for Ubuntu Networking. The role focuses on strengthening tooling, services, documentation, robustness, security and clarity of Linux network abstractions to provide fast, reliable and secure connections for Ubuntu across cloud, server, desktop and IoT.The network stack is a core OS component where stability and uptime are paramount. We are expanding the Foundations team to work on Ubuntu connectivity, including bridges, bonds, routing, DNS resolution and related technologies. The role may involve working with kernel components, iwd, NetworkManager, wpa_supplicant, bluetooth stacks, and other networking technologies, and contributing to Netplan as the central tool for connectivity.The Ubuntu Foundations Team delivers the core of the Ubuntu system and builds on the technical excellence of Debian to provide reliable, free software components for Ubuntu products and services.Location: This role will be based remotely in the AMERICAS region ResponsibilitiesCollaborate proactively with a distributed teamShape software-defined networking products for evolving data center architectures to meet bandwidth, reliability, security, and interoperability demandsWrite high-quality, well-designed and well-documented softwareDebug issues and produce high-quality code to fix themCollaborate with a globally distributed organizationContribute to technical documentation to make it the best of its kindDemonstrate technical leadership internally, towards partners, and in open source communitiesInfluence open-source projects and communitiesShape innovative product strategiesWork from home with global travel 2 to 4 weeks per year for internal and external events What we are looking for in youDeep understanding and passion for Linux networking, from kernel to user spaceProfessional experience with computer networks, including virtual networks and distributed systems; understanding of hardware offloading technologiesInterest in systemd-networkd, NetworkManager, ModemManager, iwd, conman, bluez, iproute2, Open vSwitch, WireGuard and similar componentsFluency in at least one of Golang, C/C++, Rust or PythonExperience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)Interest in packaging software for Debian and UbuntuAcademic track record; undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling alternative pathLove of technology and working with brilliant peopleCurious, flexible, articulate and accountable; strong soft skills and self-motivationAbility to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks What we offer colleaguesDistributed work environment with twice-yearly team sprints in personPersonal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per yearAnnual compensation review and performance-driven bonus or incentiveAdditional benefits reflecting company valuesFair global compensation with consideration of location and performanceLocal and global holiday leave, maternity/paternity leave, and wellness programsOpportunities to travel to new locations to meet colleagues About CanonicalCanonical is a pioneering tech firm at the forefront of open source.
