Role Description
The Manager, Health & Safety (SM) is responsible and accountable to manage, mentor, guide, teach and coach day to day the second level of Operations Managers and their Health and Safety work team on the Kal Tire Health and Safety Management System (HSMS) requirements. This role will also be responsible to aid in the identification, development and delivery of corporate wide safety objectives tied to the overarching corporate goals and critical to successful outcomes thus reducing overall risk and losses to all team members and the organization. The Manager, Health & Safety also is responsible for managing, coordinating and reporting on successes and opportunities identified by their team and operations leaders through key metrics, scheduled field visits, regular reporting and communications to operations and internally within the health and safety team. Reporting to the Director, Health and Safety, the Manager, Health & Safety is a critical member of the Kal Tire Team.
Responsibilities
Safety Leadership- Plans, prioritizes, coordinates, and monitors field H&S activities
- Assesses & evaluates H&S field staffing requirements; recruits and trains accordingly to ensure divisional outcomes are achieved
- Provides H&S leadership and oversight while mentoring, guiding, coaching and teaching H&S team members and operations
- Collaborates with second level operations management and their teams to ensure the H&S focus in their regions remains aligned with corporate objectives.
- Ensures regular communications between Operations and H&S to identify and resolve common issues and facilitate the sharing of best practices
- Receives, considers, and makes recommendations on H&S issues
- Reviews, analyses, and reports on safety activities and performance within their area of responsibility
- Oversees the investigation of significant incidents & recommendations for improvement
- Recommends safety management system improvements based on analysis of information from the field
- Collaborates with both Corporate Health & Safety and Operations to ensure the field safety activities and performance align with overall corporate programs, strategies, and objectives.
- Provides advice, guidance and technical expertise to leadership to ensure compliance with OHS legislation as it applies to their area of responsibility
- Evolves & ensures consistent delivery of the corporate Health and Safety program across their area of responsibility
- Stays abreast of H&S concepts and relevant individual provincial legislation
- Identifies H&S and technical training gaps & facilitates subsequent development & delivery as required
- Oversees the incident notification and reporting process for their area of responsibility
- Ensures action plan development in response to external and internal audit results
- Oversees COR audit activities across their area of responsibility
- Continuously reviews the overall HSMS, training and tracking platforms, and safety culture for opportunities for improvement
- Participates in development of key safety initiatives to support a reduction in overall incidents
- Drives accountability through all levels of their team and operational leadership through regular field visits and responsibilities as outlined with the HSMS including such activities as: health and safety meetings, safety investigations, site audits, and acts as a business partner with operational leaders to advise and make recommendations for safety improvements
- Key Safety Lead in major investigations, providing timely feedback to their supervisor and operations leaders
- Liaises with & supports the Disability Team in their efforts; ensuring alignment of messaging & support of injured TMs in their recovery
- Guides & supports operations in the management of injuries and in understanding their role in the return to work program as well as in injury prevention
- Plays a consultative role in communicating, implementing and maintaining the injury management process
Job Requirements
- A diploma or degree in occupational health and safety, Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation or the equivalent combination of education and experience
- Past or current COR auditor certification
- Minimum 7 years' experience working in a full-time safety position
- Experience leading a team is required
- Experience in Automotive, Transport, Manufacturing and Mining is an asset
- Extensive knowledge of multi-province safety legislation – fully competent to access, interpret and apply all relevant Act(s) and Regulations and assess and establish compliance
- Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, & Teams)
- Excellent critical thinking, problem-solving and research skills
- Expert in evaluating regulatory and safety program compliance and overall safety program performance
- Extensive experience in leading incident investigations, performing cause analysis and preparing formal reports of findings and recommendations
- Superior interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
- Able to develop effective relationships with various internal and external stakeholders
- Able to gain credibility and engage, motivate and positively influence others
- Able to explain areas for improvement and offer solutions in a collaborative and respectful way
- Thorough knowledge of audit protocols and techniques
