Manager, Career Education and Professional Development - Faculty of ScienceJoin to apply for the Manager, Career Education and Professional Development - Faculty of Science role at McMaster UniversityThe Manager, Career Education & Professional Development, will lead the career education team – undergraduate and graduate – to deliver career programming in fulfillment of the strategic direction of Science Careers & Experience Centre.Reporting to the director, Science Careers & Experience Centre, the manager’s role will lead, coach, and supervise a team of career education professionals to ensure McMaster science students receive best in class, innovative, impactful, student-centered career programming that empowers them to create authentic and meaningful lives and careers.This position is also responsible for staying up to date with the latest advances in the field of career education, including technology, particularly Gen AI related including research, evaluate, cost, and make recommendations related to the purchase and use of technology to support the team in maximizing efficiencies.This position will be vital in contributing to and implementing an intentional operational strategy that ensures we are meeting and reporting on key performance indicators in pursuit of our service excellence goals.In addition, the Manager will be responsible for researching market trends, best practices in service delivery, and program assessment to inform program specifically as it relates to science students.As a TMG position, this role at McMaster offers robust, market-driven compensation, benefits, retirement savings plans/pensions, paid time-off, performance and service recognition, tuition assistance for employees, tuition bursary for dependents, and many other professional development and growth opportunities. Details can be accessed through the links throughout the overview document.Accountabilities:Strategic Planning/Leadership:Under the leadership of the Director, develops and implements an annual operational plan for career education that includes strategic initiatives, new program/events, metrics, benchmarking, and resourcing identification.Provides leadership to the career team to ensure programming quality standards are maintained, programming is designed and implemented in line with university policy, Science Careers & Experience and Faculty of Science strategic plans. Problem solves with team as issues arise.Develops a service delivery approach that maximizes resources and increases services/supports during peak and critical times. Considers online, in-person and hybrid service delivery and collaborations with employers, community partners and alumni, and student-to-student support models.Collaborates with the Events & Communications Specialist to develop student communication plans that seek to engage more students with career education, starting earlier and with more frequent developmental touchpoints during their education.Develops career education initiatives to ensure consistency and scaffolding in career education programming across the Faculty.Respond to the dynamic and changing needs of the new workplace, employer expectations and market conditions. Leads research and scans current sector trends to ensure programming adapts to the ever-changing environment and consistently ensures our students are prepared to excel in their chosen fields. Including the use of technology, in particular Gen AI, in the field of career education.Demonstrate the faculty’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity by ensuring that the specific needs of all groups of students are considered and supported.Provide leadership for the Science Peer Help Initiative (SciPHI) program to ensure the program expands and develops but retains its value to recipients and student volunteers and leaders.Participates as a departmental representative on various McMaster committees and external professional associations as agreed.Responsible for ensuring the strategic goals and annual objectives of the Career Team are met and reported on.Program Management:Manages the day-to-day operations of the career team to ensure quality and consistency of services and programming.Lead the development of career education programming for all levels of students. Lead a team of professionals to deliver curricular career education, workshops, class talks, employer events, one-on-one and small group sessions, and peer support services.Ensures team develops and executes an annual plan that ensures optimal service provision in line with Science Careers & Experience multi-year strategic direction.Coordinate the compilation of statistics, analysis of data, and preparation of reports that provide the basis for discussion and making recommendations for curriculum or policy changes. Creates benchmarking and reporting tools to monitor success.Ensure all programming is designed ensuring equity and inclusivity. Ensures programming is constructed to promote equity, diversity, inclusion, and Indigeneity by consulting with the Associate Dean EDII, Office for Equity and Inclusion and by seeking student input and feedback and developing programming in keeping with best practices in this area.Develop and cultivate partnerships with each department and school, working together to create and deliver customized career programming in line with evolving resource constraints.Develop and maintain broader external partnerships to support enhanced career programming.Responsible for establishing and implementing standard operating procedures for the teams and accountable for implementing and tracking performance metrics. Ensures compliance and alignment with university policy and guidelines.Develop new programming in support of our strategic direction and in response to evolving business and student needs.Conduct periodic (annual or bi-annual) student career needs assessment to identify their needs and collect feedback on services provided.Ensures that concerns of students are addressed expeditiously within the parameters of University policy.Partners with academic teams and registrar’s office on matters related to admission, enrolment and grading as well as compliance with academic policy.Reporting:Track and measure student engagement in career programming, specifically QS rankings.Collect and evaluate student satisfaction with career programming.Develop and innovation on data collection techniques to assess career programming outcomes.Analyze and report on programming outcomes including providing recommendations for improvement.Human Resources Management:Provide effective coaching and direction to their direct reporting staff including the development of goals and objectives and provides appropriate feedback on performance. Act as the first point of contact for all staff and labour related issues related to the areas of accountability.Responsible for the daily supervision, recruitment and performance management of 5 full-time continuing staff and up to 15 student staffPromotes collaboration across career teams at DeGroote and across the university. Train and develop all team members on the implementation of career education appointments, workshops and education using coaching principles and experiential learning theory.Fiscal:Prepare estimates and monitors budget for programs/activities related to areas of responsibility.Qualifications:Education:A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in science, business, education, or a related field; preference of a master’s degree.Human Resources Management Diploma/ Ontario Certified Career Development Certification or similar is considered an asset.Experience:Experience with the Canadian educational systems and the structure of Canadian education.Workshop development and facilitation skills - ability to deliver to diverse groups of stakeholders - employers, students, Faculty, advisory boards, professional associations, conferences.Experience in program development and assessment/evaluation strategies.Previous experience leading a team. Preferably working within a unionized environment.Minimum of 3-5 years leadership experience in this specialty area.Knowledge/Skills:Knowledge of Canadian Labour Law.Demonstrated knowledge of local and global labour market trends – opportunities and job gaps.Excellent interpersonal, diplomacy and communication skills.Strong ability to lead, motivate and set high-performance standards for self and others.
