Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) The Department of Canadian Heritage’s Visitor Experience Program provides tourism information, heritage interpretation, and education services to visitors exploring Canada's Capital Region. By joining the program, you will gain: Knowledge: Through our comprehensive training on Canadian history and heritage, you will deepen your understanding of Canada's rich past and its significance to both Canadians and international visitors. Customer Service Skills: You will enhance your customer service skills as you adapt to different visitors' needs and preferences. Language Proficiency: You will express yourself in both official languages and refine your second language skills (English or French) as you provide services in both official languages. Public Speaking Skills: You will have the opportunity to refine your public speaking skills as you engage with a variety of audiences and group sizes. You will develop confidence in conveying information effectively to captivate and educate your audience. Personal and Professional Growth: You will develop both personally and professionally in a team environment as you contribute to a vital cultural and educational mission. Moreover, there are many opportunities to continue within the government after a FSWEP contract. What you will do As a Student Capital Ambassador for Canada's Capital Region, you will: work outdoors 95% of the time, on your feet for prolonged periods in various weather conditions, from very hot to rainy days engage with visitors from around the world at various historically significant sites interpret the significance of landmarks through the lens of Canada's rich history answer visitors’ questions and recommend experiences in the Capital Region and surrounding areas convey information fluently in both official languages, English and French lead guided activities for schools and create guided tours for the public be part of an inclusive, dynamic, and creatively stimulating team environment To excel in these responsibilities, you will receive comprehensive training in our programs, heritage interpretation techniques, and customer service. The training will also help you to develop your public speaking and presentation skills. Breakdown of role: 50% visitor services such as answering questions from visitors. 30% providing heritage interpretation at different monuments and important sites 10% giving public tours 10% participating in special events (Canada Day, Changing of the Guard ceremony) Duration: Full-time job during the summer season from April 29 to September 7, 2026. Possibility to be rehired part-time during the 2026-2027 academic year. What we are looking for Post-secondary students who: are willing to learn: an interest for continuous learning is essential, as Canada’s Capital Region is rich in history, culture, and heritage have interpersonal and communication skills: these skills are crucial for creating meaningful connections with visitors, providing clear information, and nurturing an environment of teamwork are adaptable: this job is performed in various environments and requires adaptability. Canada’s Capital Region welcomes a diversity of visitors. The ambassador should be able to tailor their tours and interactions to diverse groups Who can apply? You are eligible if you meet the following criteria: You registered in an undergraduate or college program. You meet the required Language Proficiency: Fluent in French and English. Note: Preference will be given to candidates with Canadian citizenship or permanent status. Conditions of employment Successful candidates must be prepared to: obtain and maintain a Reliability Status wear and maintain a uniform – provided by Visitor Experience work a 37.5h/week variable schedule including weekends and holidays work overtime (as required) work in outdoor locations in various weather conditions perform certain physical tasks, for example standing for prolonged periods, carrying a work bag, and lifting heavy objects Additional information Candidates must pay for any travel expenses incurred to attend assessments, such as in-person interviews. No relocation expenses will be reimbursed if a successful candidate moves as result of an offer of student employment. No commuting expenses will be reimbursed.
