Founded in Quebec and now assured by a global presence, OPAL-RT has the wind in its sails Job Summary The Research and Development team at OPAL-RT is seeking an FPGA Designer to contribute to the development of IP cores for the VHDL emulation of various electronic components used in battery cell monitoring systems (BMS). BMS represent a large portion of cost in automotive and aerospace vehicles, and real-time BMS simulators are becoming pivotal to meet the electrification needs of these industries. As an FPGA Designer at OPAL-RT, you will play a key role in the development of CMDE (Cell Monitoring Device Emulation) for our cutting‑edge real‑time simulators. You will contribute to the design, implementation, and simulation of IP blocks on Xilinx FPGAs to emulate BMS systems in real time while meeting the strict constraints of real electronic components. You will also collaborate with the eFPGASIM team, who are responsible for integrating your bitstreams into the client application. Main Responsibilities Design and develop FPGA modules primarily in VHDL and deliver “IP cores.” Perform unit, functional, and integration testing of the IP cores. Collaborate with software, hardware, and application teams to ensure optimal compatibility. Participate in FPGA code reviews. Optimize performance, latency, and resource utilization of FPGA designs. Contribute to technical documentation and version management. Requirements Education: Bachelor's degree in Microelectronics or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience). Experience: 2 - 5 years of experience, including the successful implementation of FPGA projects from architecture to deployment. Knowledge required: Strong understanding of high‑speed logic, digital, and sequential circuits. Experience with high‑speed transceivers, clock domain management, and meeting synthesis constraints. Hands‑on experience with Xilinx/AMD FPGA families (Versal, UltraScale, or Series‑7). Familiarity with communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, etc. Knowledge of the following tools (assets): Simulation and synthesis tools (Vivado or Quartus), ChipScope or Vivado Logic Analyzer, AMD System Generator/Model Composer, oscilloscope, logic analyzer, function generator. Tortoise Git/GitLab. MathWorks Matlab/Simulink. Understanding of PCIe bus architecture. Language skills: French required. Good English skills for reading specialized/scientific books not available in French and for using specialized software that exists only in English. Personal Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with people of various backgrounds (board designers, firmware engineers, software developers), rigor and determination, organization and planning, expectation management, ability to work in a team, autonomy and proactivity, flexibility and adaptability.
