Collingwood, Ontario, Canada MacLean Engineering Full time
POSITION TITLE: Team Lead – Digital Control Systems

LOCATION: Sudbury, Ontario or Collingwood, Ontario

At MacLean Engineering, we're not just building machines – we're pioneering innovations that redefine industry standards. We are looking for a Team Lead for the Vehicle Controls team responsible for the Shotcrete and Lift Utility Vehicle product lines, who is passionate about pushing the boundaries of engineering excellence and wants to be at the forefront of technological advancements in the mining industry. We prioritize safety, integrity, and teamwork in everything we do by ensuring that every member of our team feels respected, heard, and inspired to excel. Join us in building a brighter future together at MacLean Engineering

The Position: As the leader of one of our digital controls teams within our Telematics Automation and Controls Division, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our vehicle technology. Collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, your expertise will drive the development roadmap and technology stack for our MacLean Operating System – a digital control platform standardizing our full fleet control system. This role offers an exciting opportunity to apply your technical skills, creativity, and strategic influence to solve complex challenges in a fast-paced and rewarding environment while mentoring and empowering the team.

The team of mechatronics engineers is based in Sudbury, where our underground test mine and facility are, and Collingwood, where our prototype manufacturing is headquartered. The team works closely with the other T.A.C. groups like the systems engineering team and is responsible for the design of our control platform, autonomy, and data ecosystem. You will be responsible for the proper product definition and verification for hydro-mechanical or electrical subsystems controlling the vehicle. The successful candidate will be at the forefront of a rapidly growing technology sector, directly contributing to innovative solutions for real-world challenges in underground mining battery electric and diesel telemetry.

Responsibilities And Duties

Technical Leadership and Mentorship
  • Lead a team of engineers responsible for designing, developing, deploying, and maintaining scalable digital control systems across 30+ vehicle classes and advanced technology features.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and refine control system architectures leveraging Ethernet and CAN protocols, including CANOpen and J1939, to enable efficient communication, data processing, and integration across vehicle systems.
  • Specify and evaluate LiDAR, radar, and other perception sensors for autonomy readiness, ensuring compatibility with control system architectures and seamless integration into vehicle and off-vehicle communication networks.
Control Systems Development
  • Own the architecture, development, and operation of digital control systems from their concept phase through to production release.
  • Implement best software, electrical, and hydro-mechanical best practices for CAN based control systems.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including product management, QA, and operations to align technology solutions with business objectives.
  • Act as a technical liaison with stakeholders, providing updates, gathering requirements, and addressing technical concerns as well as work closely with project management to plan and track project progress.
Documentation and Compliance
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of system architecture, configurations, and processes.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations like ISO-13849 and industry best practices.
First Year Goals
People: Foster teamwork and create team identity by establishing the new team, a collection of SMEs in related domains, as a cohesive unit, aligned on shared goals. Leverage true collaboration and knowledge sharing across shared domains, like mechatronics engineering and control theory, as well as overlapping functions in differing domains, like testing in HIL and SIL environments, to mature the team and its interdepartmental impact.

Processes: Define a streamlined process for integrating large new development projects into the cross-departmental new capital vehicle builds process by improving software release tooling and pipelines, factory and site acceptance testing, communication, project performance metrics and KPIs, and stakeholder reporting between agile and waterfall managed projects, and building the team's projects into better leveraged critical vehicle tooling.

Products
  • Learn the current and envisioned future state of MacLean Engineering's core underground and surface mining product line's control systems.
  • Advance the design and implementation of new CAN bus control product "MacLean Operating System (MOS)" with new top level architecture designs for 4 vehicle application types (I.e. Rockbreaker).
  • Own the safe design of new feature additions, like transitioning to joystick steering, for both EV and diesel carrier architectures, electrical schematics, and software implementations.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, leadership abilities, and problem-solving capabilities. They will demonstrate organizational skills, discipline, an aptitude for proactive learning, and a positive attitude. Additionally, they should meet the following qualifications:
  • Minimum 7 years of experience with the job responsibilities and duties described above.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English; proficiency in other languages, primarily Spanish and French, is an asset.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, computer science, or a related field is an asset.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) license or similar certification.
  • Mobile vehicle telemetry and Mining experience are an asset.
Closing: Inspired by over 50 years of pioneering excellence, MacLean Engineering continues to lead the way in underground mining equipment solutions. Rooted in our founder's unwavering commitment to safety, productivity, and enduring quality, we are driven by innovation and expansion. With facilities strategically located across Ontario in Collingwood, Owen Sound, Barrie, and Sudbury, and across the globe in Mexico, South Africa, and Australia, our dedicated workforce of skilled tradespeople collaborates in a safety-centric environment to deliver superior components and equipment to the underground mining, municipal, environmental, and industrial sectors. Join us at MacLean Engineering and be part of a legacy built on innovation, quality, and lasting impact.
