Red Deer, Canada Alberta Health Services Full time

Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) is seeking a full-time Anatomical or General Pathologist for Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre (RDRHC). RDRHC is a regional institution located in the city of Red Deer, Alberta, and the referral centre for over 30 smaller rural hospitals in Central Zone. The catchment area has a population of 450,000 and serves the geographic area of Central Alberta. RDRHC is a 375-bed acute care facility providing comprehensive service for most specialties, including an onsite cancer centre. The successful candidate will join a team of 12 pathologists, a PhD clinical chemist, and a medical microbiologist. The successful candidate is required to have excellent skills in surgical pathology and cytology. Additional expertise in dermatopathology, hematopathology, and/or transfusion medicine would be of value. There are opportunities to perform bone marrow biopsies and fine-needle aspirations (FNAs) and participate in oversight of small rural hospital laboratories. The RDRHC lab is an elective training site for both the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary Anatomical and General Pathology residency programs. It is expected that the successful applicant would participate in pathology resident teaching and supervision on occasion. There is opportunity to obtain clinical academic appointments at one or both institutions.

APL is a multi-site, province-wide laboratory organization providing comprehensive laboratory services and is an independent, but publicly funded organization that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Alberta Health Services (AHS). The RDRHC laboratory has sections of anatomical pathology (including non-gynecologic cytology), hematology and transfusion medicine, biochemistry, and microbiology with most testing performed onsite. Comprehensive onsite immunohistochemistry and special stains are available. Approximately 32,000 surgical specimens, 6,500 non-gynecologic cytology specimens, 200 bone marrow biopsies, and 6,000 peripheral blood smear specimens are processed annually.

Job Summary & Responsibilities

Anatomical/General Pathologists must maintain the highest possible standards of practice including prompt delivery of services to match established key performance indicators and provincial metrics, actively participate in quality assurance and quality improvement programs, provide departmental on-call coverage as required, and provide teaching when needed.

Qualifications

Qualifications include a MD, eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta, and certification in Anatomic Pathology (Diagnostic and Molecular Pathology) or General Pathology (Diagnostic and Clinical Pathology) by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or Anatomic Pathology/Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology.
