The Trade, Investment and Food Safety (TIFS) Division works to expand and diversify Alberta’s food and bioproduct manufacturing sector while ensuring effective food safety assurance systems. The Meat & Dairy Inspection Section (MDIS) licenses and regulates approximately 120 red meat and poultry abattoirs, 195 mobile butchers, 47 mobile butcher facilities and about 270 On‑Farm Slaughter Operations. Job Purpose The Food Safety Branch seeks two Regulatory Compliance Specialists to provide one‑on‑one coaching and assistance to prospective and current provincial meat industry licensees. The roles focus on supporting licensees to exceed basic regulatory requirements for food safety, animal welfare, facility infrastructure, and other operational standards, and on linking them to additional supports and services. Key Responsibilities Provide guidance, consultations and coaching in formats such as site visits, written guidance and virtual sessions on regulatory requirements and practical applications, including the Meat Inspection Act and Regulation (MIA/MIR), Meat Facility Standards (MFS), MDIS directives, SOPs, policies and other AGI‑regulated legislation (SRM, DDAR, etc.). Facilitate operator awareness and linkages to opportunities that enhance business sustainability. Conduct on‑site facility and operator need assessments. Develop and deliver on‑site or virtual training and educational materials. Maintain current knowledge of national and global food safety certification requirements and provide advice and gap assessments to operators pursuing them. Influence and contribute to collaborative food safety efforts with regulatory stakeholders. Participate in the development and improvement of Meat Inspection Directives, SOPs, policies and guidelines, especially in food safety and infrastructure. Play a key role in the branch’s Incident Command System (ICS) organizational structure and activities as required. Qualifications Requirements: Two‑year technical diploma in Food Safety, Animal Science, Microbiology, Animal Health or related fields plus a minimum of four years of directly related experience within the provincial or federal meat inspection or meat safety industry, or equivalent. Education and experience may be combined at a 1:1 ratio. Preference: Practical knowledge of meat slaughter and processing environments. Assets: Knowledge and experience applying regulatory requirements, standards and practices for slaughter and meat processing operations. Practical knowledge of meat slaughter and processing environments. Skill in performing gap assessments and root cause analysis. Creativity to identify solutions that meet regulatory requirements. Experience collaborating with other specialists. Excellent interpersonal skills in communication, conflict resolution and relationship development. Ability to tailor communication for effective delivery. Expertise in developing and presenting educational materials. The ability to work independently and as part of a team while demonstrating Alberta Public Service values of respect, integrity, accountability and excellence is essential.
