It collaborates across communities and disciplines—from nuclear and particle physics to the life and material sciences—creating knowledge and opportunity for all.ResponsibilitiesApply and develop advanced methods and technologies in Machine Learning (ML) and Quantum Information (QI) to enhance TRIUMF’s research programs.Collaborate with research groups to identify opportunities where ML and QI can improve scientific output.Provide guidance in developing and adapting innovative methodologies to achieve research objectives.Co‑supervise students and postdoctoral researchers engaged in related projects.Lead R&D activities enabling the use of advanced compute accelerators (GPUs, FPGAs, Quantum Computing) at the Canadian ATLAS Tier‑1 Centre.Share expertise through presentations, workshops, and training opportunities at TRIUMF and with national/international collaborators.Contribute to training and mentorship through internships, capstone projects, and summer schools.Build and maintain strategic partnerships with industry to expand TRIUMF’s ML and QI initiatives and their impact.Work on complex issues that require in-depth evaluation of variable factors and make non‑routine decisions on project work where a high degree of accuracy and sound judgement are vital.Determine selection criteria for methods and techniques used in individual projects and present complex ideas to interdisciplinary teams.Lead cross‑functional work that extends beyond their own area of expertise and drive long‑timeline objectives with impact on several teams.Develop a professional network within the institution, nationally and internationally among academic and business leaders.Supervision ExercisedThere are no direct supervisory responsibilities associated with the position; however, the incumbent will act as a mentor and provide guidance to TRIUMF’s scientific users, staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students.Knowledge and SkillsExcellent leadership, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, planning skills, attention to detail, and flexibility to deal with changing priorities.The ability to work independently and anticipate researchers’ needs.Extensive experience and expert professional‑level knowledge in several areas, including: Machine LearningLarge‑scale computingQuantum ComputingQuantum AnnealingQuantum Assisted Machine LearningGenerative ModelsSoftware development/coding in Python, Julia, deep‑learning libraries (PyTorch, TensorFlow), scientific computing libraries (scikit‑learn, SciPy, Matplotlib); C++ beneficial.Demonstrated interest and specialized depth/breadth of expertise in applying Machine Learning to two or more of the following fields: Material ScienceNuclear PhysicsParticle PhysicsLife SciencesSoftware development/coding in Python, Julia, deep‑learning libraries (PyTorch, TensorFlow), scientific computing libraries (scikit‑learn, SciPy, Matplotlib); C++ beneficial.Minimum Qualifications and ExperiencePhD in the natural sciences or computer science with domain knowledge in at least two of TRIUMF’s scientific fields.A demonstrated research record and previous experience in scientific computing.Typically 8 years of relevant professional experience.CompensationAnnual salary would be $111,775.00 CAD plus a comprehensive benefits package.BenefitsTRIUMF paid dental, extended health, vision care, emergency travel assistance, Employee Assistance Program (EAP), Life Insurance, and supplementary Wellness Benefits.Excellent Employee Pension Plan.Disability benefits, and optional additional Life insurance and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D).Generous time‑away.Maternity and paternity leaves and top‑ups.Equal Opportunity EmployerAll qualified applicants are encouraged to apply and will be given serious consideration; in the case of equal qualifications, preference will be given to a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
