The Mactaquac Generating Station began generating electricity in 1968. Since the 1980s, concrete portions of the hydro station have been affected by a chemical reaction called alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR). The reaction causes the concrete to swell and crack and has required substantial annual maintenance and repairs. NB Power is proposing a project to ensure the station can operate to its intended 100-year lifespan with a modified approach to maintenance and adjusting and replacing equipment and concrete overtime. As part of the Mactaquac Life Achievement Project, the Engineer I-IV will be responsible for supporting all aspects of design and construction of project work. This includes ensuring NB Power is prepared to complete the preliminary designs required and overseeing and coordinating all design and construction work performed by external consultants to ensure safety, environment, quality, efficiency, and compliance with organizational standards. Mechanical Engineering key functions include: Review design and oversee installation and commissioning of turbines, hydraulic gates, large cranes, and mechanical systems such as HVAC, fire protection, and drainage. Provide field support during construction, managing Request for Information (RFIs), contractor quality, and adapting to changed conditions. Collaborate across project phases with all stakeholders (internal and external), contributing technical expertise from planning through close-out. Our ideal teammate will have: Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering Registered Professional Engineer licensed in New Brunswick or eligible for immediate transfer Six years of experience with any of large hydraulic gate design and installation, large cranes, turbines, Balance of Plant mechanical systems (fire protection, drainage, piping, pumps, HVAC) as well as mechanical/instrumentation construction oversight Participation in design teams during planning, detailed design, execution, and close-out phases of mega-projects Providing technical guidance during construction, including responding to RFIs, coordinating contractor quality programs, handling changed conditions and knowledge of relevant regulations, standards, and industry best practices Civil Engineering key functions include: Review design and oversee construction of reinforced concrete and structural steel components, ensuring integrity and compliance. Review design and oversee construction of earthworks and dam-related activities, applying geotechnical insights and mitigation strategies for AAR concrete effects. Support construction execution, resolving RFIs and maintaining quality standards throughout the project lifecycle. Collaborate across project phases with all stakeholders (internal and external), contributing technical expertise from planning through close-out. Our ideal teammate will have: Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering Registered Professional Engineer licensed in New Brunswick or eligible for immediate transfer Six years of experience with reinforced concrete and structural steel design and construction along with civil construction oversight Participation in design teams during planning, detailed design, execution, and close-out phases of mega-projects Providing technical guidance during construction, including responding to RFIs, coordinating contractor quality programs, handling changed conditions and knowledge of relevant regulations, standards, and industry best practices Electrical Engineering key functions include: Review designs and oversee implementation and commissioning of electrical distribution and control systems, general Balance of Plant equipment, and SCADA, generator protection, and communications. Guide electrical construction activities, addressing RFIs, overseeing quality programs, and managing field changes. Contribute to hydroelectric equipment integration, ensuring safe and efficient operation from design to commissioning. Collaborate across project phases with all stakeholders (internal and external), contributing technical expertise from planning through close-out. Our ideal teammate will have: Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering Registered Professional Engineer licensed in New Brunswick or eligible for immediate transfer Six years of experience in AC and DC electrical distribution, communications systems (fire protection, access control, SCADA), generator protection and control systems as well as electrical/instrumentation construction oversight Participation in design teams during planning, detailed design, execution, and close-out phases of mega-projects Providing technical guidance during construction, including responding to RFIs, coordinating contractor quality programs, handling changed conditions and knowledge of relevant regulations, standards, and industry best practices The following are considered assets: Experience with turbine design and installation Penstock or large diameter piping and welding programs Earthworks and embankment dam design and construction Experience with hydroelectric generation equipment (e.g., generators) Experience with AAR concrete effects on mechanical, civil, or electrical equipment Brownfield or overhaul project experience Please note that during the initial phase of the project, positions will be based at Head Office. As the project advances, the primary work location will transition to the Mactaquac Generating Station. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered. Subject to competition response, the minimum qualifications may be modified.
