River Valley School, located in Bowness, in Calgary's NW, is an independent school that is committed to fostering curiosity, creativity, and holistic education. River Valley School is currently seeking a Director of Finance to join our close-knit and dynamic team.

Qualifications and Skill Set

  • A minimum of 5+ years of accounting and financial management experience
  • Not-for-profit or independent school experience an asset
  • Strong leadership, mentorship, technology, and analytical skills
  • Knowledge of Sage 50 accounting software and ADP (payroll system)
  • Experience working with financial institution platforms
  • Previous experience working with a Board of Directors and Audit / Finance Committee
  • Knowledge of CRA regulations affecting charities an asset

Director of Finance Responsibilities:

  • Managing, preparing, administering, and directing control of River Valley School's financial resources
  • Develop and implement concepts for financial planning, resource planning, and budget control
  • Providing strategic financial advice and insightful analytics to support effective decision making across all areas
  • Develop and streamline a management reporting framework to provide timely and accurate information to the Senior Leadership Team
  • Responsible for the annual budgeting process. Participate with other stakeholders to establish financial strategic plans and objectives.
  • Monitor River Valley School's adherence to approved budgets and develop a robust strategic planning process to address current and future resources
  • Prepares and presents the school's monthly, quarterly, and year-end internal and external financial statements to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors
  • Open communication with the Finance Committee and Board of Directors on financial matters
  • Works directly with the school's appointed auditors on the yearly audited financial statements
  • Ensures budget reporting and audited financial statements are submitted and expectations of Alberta Education are met
  • Identifies and manages the school's insurance program and business risk
  • Ensures legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions, including compliance with CRA regarding the issuance of donation tax receipts
  • Serves as the financial liaison of River Valley School to the campus and external constituents, ensuring all financial goals are aligned and transparent
  • Provides leadership, guidance, and mentorship to the accounting and facilities team

Full-time, Permanent (Monday – Friday with some evening meeting expectations)
