The Library of the Supreme Court of Canada is home to one of Canada’s deepest and most varied collections of legal research materials. The extensive legal information resources, digital and print, and services maintained by the Library support the judges of the Court in the exercise of their duties within a bilingual and bijural institution. The Library is committed to innovation in providing comprehensive, open, and reliable access to the collection.

The Director, Library Services, is accountable for the planning, development, and delivery of legal information and research services at the Supreme Court of Canada Library to support the research needs of the judges and staff at the Court. This includes the provision and stewardship of a bilingual and bijural collection reflecting the two legal traditions in Canada – the common law and civil law – and the curation of a collection encompassing the law related to indigenous peoples. The Director also serves as a key strategic advisor to Court officials on library and knowledge management issues and fosters the evolution of library services by directing and modernizing plans for the development of a digital library infrastructure. The Director is tasked with the opportunity to re-imagine/re-invent and steer the Library’s vision and role as a research library in the context of technological developments and the legal publishing landscape.Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff one (1) position on an indeterminate (permanent) basis.

It may also be used to establish a pool of qualified candidates to staff similar positions at the Office of the Registrar of the Supreme Court of Canada with varying language requirements, security profiles, and tenures. 1

EDUCATION:

Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution with a Master’s degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science; OR graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution with a Bachelor’s degree in Library Science or in Library and Information Science for which another Bachelor’s degree was a prerequisite.

EXPERIENCE:

Significant experience in managing at least one aspect of the operations, programs, or services of a library in a legal environment, such as collection development, reference/research services or digital library systems.
Experience leading or developing projects requiring building partnerships across various sections within a Library or collaboration across branches of an organization.
Experience in managing human and financial resources.
Experience providing briefings, strategic advice, and recommendations to senior management.

A library in a legal environment could include an academic law library in a post-secondary educational institution, a library in a law firm, or a library that supports the work of a court, board, tribunal, or law society.

Some examples of managing human resources are: supervising staff, staffing, establishing work plans or performance objectives, conducting performance assessments and feedback, and approving training. Some examples of managing financial resources are: full delegation for a budget, being responsible for financial planning, forecasting, and reporting.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience in project management for relocation of a library.

Knowledge of issues, emerging trends, and technological developments in the library and information field, such as artificial intelligence, knowledge management, legal publishing landscape, web-based services and standards, electronic information service delivery applications and methods, digital libraries and resources, metadata standards, and the development of legal information portals./>Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
