Edmonton, Canada Stantec Full time

Many of the world’s top engineers and scientists come together in our Water business because they view a community’s interaction with water a bit differently—as a single holistic system, rather than unconnected networks divided by jurisdictional boundaries. Working throughout the hydrologic cycle, we are delivering sustainable solutions to make sure water is where it should be and available when needed. Our experts guide our work with scientific rigor, an innovative spirit, and a vision for growth. Every day, we help communities improve, reuse, and protect this precious resource for future generations. By 2025 we’re hiring 2,000 people (like you) to join our team. Grow with us, H2O+U.

Our Edmonton Water Team has several leading conveyance specialists that are engaged on projects across Canada, the US, and other countries throughout the world. We specialize in the execution of trenchless piping installation methods, piping condition assessment, and trenchless piping rehabilitation. Our team fosters the development of our staff through strong mentorship and exposure to large complex projects. At Stantec you will be able to take part in these opportunities with diverse technical challenges all while receiving the in-house support you need to succeed.

Your Opportunity

An opportunity currently exists for a Senior Civil/Conveyance Engineer in our Edmonton Water Group, focusing on trenchless piping design. The ideal candidate will also have a combination of technical and management skills suited to lead and participate in the delivery of conveyance piping, trenchless installation and rehabilitation, and condition assessment projects for municipal and industrial clients. It is expected that the Senior Civil/Conveyance Engineer will utilize their knowledge and experience on similar projects to guide their project teams.

As a Senior Civil/Conveyance Engineer your work will include undertaking engineering studies, engineering design and document preparation, construction contract administration, field work and/or field inspections as required. You will assist in leading project teams in the execution of projects to ensure delivery, resource efficiency and cost-effectiveness, and lead the design as appropriate.

Your Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage internal and external client expectations and relationships.
  • Support marketing and business development activities in positioning for potential projects, writing proposals or technical portions of multidisciplinary proposals.
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control reviews of technical deliverables (e.g. drawings, reports, etc.), including the evaluation of the completed work for accuracy and completeness.
  • Understand and implement industry standards and manuals as well as client and regulatory agency standards and requirements.
  • Conduct alternative analyses to support business case evaluations for making project decisions.
  • Participate and lead in the design as skills dictate to ensure efficient project delivery, and take professional responsibility for deliverables (e.g. Engineer-of-Record).
  • Implement understanding of discipline-specific construction elements as they relate to design to select construction methods and defining work area limits.
  • Provide mentoring to other developing technical staff and engineers-in-training.
  • Engage in leadership in Professional organizations that align with your expertise; write technical papers and deliver technical presentations for conferences.
  • Assist and/or lead the development of proposals.
Your Capabilities and Credentials:
  • Proven civil design (water conveyance, utilities, etc.) experience on water infrastructure projects.
  • Intermediate to advanced understanding of trenchless design engineering concepts and principles and ability to communicate ideas to others.
  • Excellent communication, written, and presentation skills.
  • Experience in client-facing roles.
  • Experience in proposal writing.
  • Collaborative in nature, with ability to contribute to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Understanding of all phases of project implementation, and strong understanding of engineering design processes.
  • Proven technical experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Design and construction of trenchless piping installation and rehabilitation of sewers, watermains, electrical and communication conduits, and gas pipelines.
    • Knowledge of relevant codes and standards for the trenchless technology industry.
    • Condition assessment of municipal water and sewer infrastructure.
    • Development of technical specifications and tender documents.
    • Technical report and proposal writing.
Your Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License.
  • Minimum of 8 years of consulting experience, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in the delivery of civil/municipal infrastructure projects (conveyance of water, storm, and wastewater).
  • Registered with APEGA as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).
  • Positive working relationships with clients.
