Job Summary The Shift Power Engineer is responsible for filling out all daily logbooks and mechanical handover books as per ABSA requirements. The role also includes conducting chemical testing every three hours as required, overseeing blowdowns of boilers and autoclaves, and performing general maintenance of the facilities' “A-Pressure” registered equipment. Tasks include daily, weekly, monthly, and annual equipment maintenance, filling out logbooks, including handover notes and mechanical logbooks under ABSA regulations, PWO/UWO and PM as assigned, skills flex abilities, pre-shift toolbox huddles, shift transitions, pre‑start‑up plans, and shutdowns. Additionally, the engineer will inspect all steam traps on autoclaves, clean out Y‑strainers, check valves, air regulators, filters, separators, chemical pumps, and feed water pumps to ensure blowdowns are completed, water softener systems are maintained, and stock levels that fall below minimum requirements are reported to the supervisor. Primary Responsibilities Start‑up and shut‑down of the Nisku Manufacturing Power Plant including boilers, compressors, portable boilers, and generators. Complete the three‑hourly cycle daily checklist of boilers and conduct chemical testing one to two times per 12‑hour shift, including manual and automatic blow‑downs of all boilers. Maintain and monitor chemical, salt, and filter levels and report to supervisor prior to low‑level limits for all boiler‑room consumables. Apply 6S principles to boiler rooms (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain, and Safety). Conduct regular inspections of autoclaves, steam traps, Y‑strainers, steam valves, actuators, and positioners; complete assigned AIMS Planned Work Orders and Unplanned Work Orders. Collaborate with the maintenance department to ensure assets on the shift are fully functioning and in good condition. Report and address any safety and maintenance hazards in coordination with the maintenance department and production facilities. Coach, mentor, and develop team members in the Power Engineer Department on legislation, regulations, and mechanical/chemical/pressure skills. Perform other duties as assigned by the Power Engineer Supervisor, Maintenance Manager, or Maintenance Coordinator. Education and Experience Requirements Current Power Engineer 5th/4th Class ticket. Ability to operate a power‑plant rated boiler based upon Power Engineering Class level. Strong mechanical and maintenance background. Comprehensive knowledge of boilers, autoclaves, receivers, valves, hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical, mechanical, chemical, and boiler maintenance, and safety pressure‑vessel standards. Competencies Making complex decisions: assess mechanical and operational information to make informed decisions. Taking initiative: proactively identify maintenance needs, safety issues, and escalating them immediately. Collaboration: work effectively with teams including HSE, maintenance, and production to ensure safe, smooth operations. Communicate effectively: maintain clear and concise communication. Resilience: maintain focus and effectiveness under pressure and operational uncertainties. Manage ambiguity: adapt well to changes in work priorities and unforeseen maintenance issues without compromising safety or performance. Technical Competencies AIMS Fork‑lift training considered an asset. Kronos Overall computer skills.
