The roles we offer are impactful because the work we do is significant. Join us Conductors work as part of train crews and perform tasks related to the movement of trains, rail cars, and locomotives in rail yards and on the road. They coordinate train assembly and conduct ground work outside the locomotive cab while in the yard or en-route like operating track switches, picking up rail cars, and making emergency repairs. Responsibilities The following are essential job functions that an employee must be able to perform to achieve the objectives of the Conductor job: Ensuring compliance with all safety and operation rules Providing and receiving instructions about the movement and placement of rail cars Assembling/dismantling trains in the rail yard and picking up/setting off rail cars en-route Observing, interpreting, and relaying signals for safe train and locomotive movement Operating track switches and inspecting train and equipment conditions Making effective decisions in unfamiliar or emergency situations Communicating with control centers, train crews, and other departments regularly via handheld radio Successful applicants will undergo an intensive paid training program with 11 weeks of training, including classroom and field training. CN offers a competitive training wage and covers expenses for transportation, accommodation, and meals while in Winnipeg. Candidates will also undergo field training and written exams as part of the training program, which is mandatory to work as a Conductor. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements Working a flexible schedule with regular attendance Physically demanding tasks such as pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying heavy loads Outdoor work in varying weather conditions Operating devices on rail cars and locomotives Climbing on/off ladders of moving rail cars Walking for extended periods Bending, stooping, squatting, and kneeling frequently Meeting medical fitness requirements and color recognition for signals Other Requirements Passing safety and rules exams High school diploma or equivalent Obtaining and maintaining Conductors Rule Card Possessing a valid driver's license Proficiency in oral and written communications Assets Completion of college or vocational/technical school or Freight Conductor experience Relevant work experience in similar conditions or safety environment Possessing a valid driver's license Local Signing Bonus Incentive
The conditions below apply to newly hired employees upon completing their training period: After probation, the employee will receive a payment After 12 months of employment as a qualified Conductor, the employee will receive a payment Approval to qualify is subject to the company's discretion, and the incentive does not apply to current CN Rail Transportation Employees.
