Job Description AECOM Buildings + Places seeks a motivated and skilled Mechanical Engineer—Building Design to lead many building projects, including commercial, institutional, and light industrial facilities. This position is based in the Burnaby, British Columbia office, with hybrid work options and occasional travel to nearby cities. The role offers significant career growth opportunities. AECOM Buildings + Places Canada (B+P Canada) is a fully integrated team that spans architecture, building engineering disciplines, landscape architecture, urban planning, economics, and asset management. Project assignments may include, but are not limited to, municipal, institutional, and government projects. Major Responsibilities Mechanical Project Lead responsible for design and construction administration. Prepare Basis of Design reports, technical memoranda, and specifications. Perform all primary design tasks at early project stages and develop concepts to high‑quality detailed design. Design HVAC systems, including package units, central plants, and hydronic systems. Design complete plumbing systems, including potable water distribution, drainage, and miscellaneous systems such as compressed air and natural gas piping. Design fire protection systems using a performance specification approach. Perform HVAC calculations and analysis using industry programs (e.g., Carrier HAP). Perform calculations for duct and pipe sizing, water and drainage flows, water heater sizing, and pump sizing and selection. Design HVAC control systems with integration into BMS and SCADA systems. Provide equipment schedules, select equipment, and coordinate with vendors. Assist in the design and drafting of mechanical systems in 3D (Revit) as needed. Perform self‑quality control reviews of design calculations or drawings before submission to senior staff. Attend and conduct meetings with clients, vendors, and other project stakeholders. Travel to construction sites for mechanical inspections and report preparation. Support field staff during construction, including responding to submittal reviews, RFIs, and site instructions. Coordinate with engineers, technicians of other disciplines, and architects. Demonstrate strong communication skills, both spoken and written. Work independently or as part of a team. Benefit from mentorship from senior engineers while contributing to live projects. Assist the mechanical engineering team manager with mentoring junior staff. Maintain well‑organized, self‑directed work habits with the ability to prioritize and schedule tasks across multiple projects. Qualifications Minimum Requirements Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering plus six (6) years of experience designing HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and controls for commercial, institutional, and light industrial facilities. Demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education may be considered. Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in British Columbia in good standing. Ability to obtain security clearance for government work. Preferred Requirements 10+ years of experience with a strong consulting industry background. Experience with sustainability standards (LEED, Net Zero, Passive House, Envision) is an asset. Ability to work with, lead, and mentor junior engineers. Additional Information Relocation is not available for this position. Sponsorship for Canadian employment authorization is not available for this position. Offered rate of compensation will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. The range for this position is CAD 115,000 to CAD 130,000 per year.
