The Opportunity

The Infrastructure Department is comprised of five Branches, including three Design and Construction Branches, the Wastewater Operations Branch, and the Water Operations Branch. p>

  1. Water supply, treatment, and distribution;
  2. Wastewater collection and treatment;
  3. The design and construction of the City's infrastructure (including treatment plants, pump stations, roads, sewers, watermains, sidewalks, stormwater management ponds, water towers, and reservoirs).

The Corporation of the City of Barrie has a work placement opportunity within the Infrastructure Department for an advanced Civil Engineering Technology or Technician student to assist in various aspects related to the inspection of municipal infrastructure projects. p>

  1. Assist in the inspection of municipal infrastructure installations, including concrete and asphalt maintenance, watermains, sewers, roads, and other municipal infrastructure to ensure that they are built in accordance with the designated specifications.
  2. Maintain records which document quality control issues and quantity measurements.
  3. Communication with contractors, residents, and businesses.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)
  • Currently enrolled in or is a student in a recognized University or College, specifically in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or Technician program*.
  • Have completed at least two full years of Post-Secondary Education, preferably in Civil or Environmental Engineering.
  • Enrolled in a recognized College or University Co-op program.
  • Minimum of 16 years of age or turning 16 by the end of the calendar year, and must have attended one of the academic establishments listed above the year in which they are applying for employment and/or returning the following year.
  • Have basic to intermediate skills in Autodesk (Auto CAD), GIS (ArcMap), and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, etc.).
  • Have a basic understanding of municipal infrastructure, including sewers and roads.
  • Have basic engineering survey, drafting, and computing skills.
  • Knowledge of Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7 is an asset.
  • Willing to work outside on construction sites daily.
Conditions of Employment
  • Have a valid Ontario Class Driver's License (preferred Class "G") with a reliable vehicle for transportation while at work (travel reimbursement will be provided).
