Indigenous Protocol and Relations Specialist, College of Medicine Role at University of Saskatchewan. This position supports Indigenous cultural programming, policies, procedures and strategies within the College of Medicine, in alignment with the Indigenous Strategy for the University of Saskatchewan, the Office of the Vice Dean Indigenous Health (OVDIH) vision and mandate, and related indigenization, reconciliation and decolonization goals. Verification of Indigenous Membership/Citizenship is a condition of employment and required to hold this position. Primary Purpose To support the development and implementation of Indigenous cultural programming, policies, procedures and strategies, and education that advance the Indigenous Strategy for the University of Saskatchewan, the OVDIH, and related initiatives, with a focus on Indigenization, reconciliation, decolonization and manachitowin. Strengthen intercultural capacity within the College of Medicine and strengthen relationships with the Indigenous community (leadership, Elders, Traditional Knowledge Keepers) to support teaching, learning and research across the college. Nature of Work Reporting to the Vice-Dean Indigenous Health, the Indigenous Protocol and Relations Specialist (IPRS) collaborates with diverse stakeholders to develop and implement Indigenous cultural and educational initiatives, training and programs. Responsibilities include day-to-day educational and cultural support for leaders, students, faculty and staff, and guidance on protocol, ceremony and traditional inquiries and events. The position operates in a fast-paced, high-volume office and requires the ability to work under pressure and establish respectful working relations with internal and external partners. The IPRS will: Provide guidance to staff, faculty, senior and academic leadership on Indigenous histories, knowledges, cultures and protocols Ensure respectful engagement with Indigenous Elders, Traditional Knowledge Keepers and Indigenous leaders Effectively communicate in documentation, awareness training, adult teaching, mentorship and workshops Facilitate teaching of Indigenous histories, contemporary realities, and Indigenous strengths including contributions to USask and to Canada The IPRS will work closely with the OVDIH team on event planning, special projects and intercultural capacity building. Accountabilities Cultural Protocol Develop understanding of the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action through recommendations, teachings and content for the College of Medicine and University Develop and manage guidelines; provide cultural advice on Indigenous protocols, traditions, practices and histories Provide cultural advice and update documents related to Indigenous cultures and protocols Provide cultural assistance to ceremonial Elders when appropriate Coordinate and advise on cultural protocol in planning large college events Collaborate with other University cultural coordinators/advisors Education and Awareness Provide cultural advice, awareness, guidance and stories related to Traditional Territorial Acknowledgements Develop and deliver cultural awareness training and workshops for the College of Medicine Increase intercultural capacity building across the college through proactive education and cultural teaching Assist in planning with respect to Indigenous education, inclusion and cultural protocols Ensure policies and practices respect cultural protocols and promote engagement of Traditional Knowledge Keepers Develop a reporting mechanism to track cultural awareness programs Collaborate to increase Indigenous student admission, retention and completion in the College of Medicine Traditional Knowledge Keeper and Elder Support Build and maintain relationships with Elders/Traditional Knowledge Keepers Lead, coordinate and document Elders dialogues Engage Elders in teaching, learning and research Manage requests for Elders and cultural experts for events, courses or dialogues Provide cultural advice to faculty and staff engaging Elders Organize protocol and gifting for Elders in relation to events and Indigenous strategy Strategic Communications and Relationships Enhance partnerships with Indigenous communities and organizations for outreach Collaborate with the College of Medicine communications team on use of materials and style guides Contribute to annual reports and evaluation tools related to Indigenous Strategy Represent the Office of the Vice Dean, Indigenous Health on committees as appointed Other responsibilities as assigned by the Manager or Vice Dean, Indigenous Health Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field; Master’s degree preferred. Minimum of three years related experience, preferably in Indigenous education, programs or communities. Experience: Knowledge of regional Indigenous cultural protocols and ceremonial observances. Experience coordinating Indigenous educational and cultural events, and knowledge of First Nations, Métis and Inuit traditions and ceremonies. Familiarity with academic ceremonies and teaching programs is an asset. Experience with funding proposals is an asset. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups and to engage Indigenous communities. Knowledge of the University of Saskatchewan and Indigenous communities is essential. Must hold and maintain a valid Saskatchewan driver’s license and driving record.
