Job Overview:
Sperry Rail, Inc. is seeking a skilled Maintenance Technician for the Kingston, ON area. The Maintenance Technician will be responsible for performing basic and preventative maintenance on our detector cars/test vehicles either in the shop or out in the field. Travel may be required.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Operate test vehicle/detector car on and off railroad tracks and in all road conditions. Perform vehicle inspections and equipment set-up. Record and interpret data on computer monitors. Service/maintain/repair the vehicle and detector carriage under the vehicle. This will entail crawling under the vehicle with clearance as little as eighteen inches and bending/kneeling/squatting in awkward postures under the vehicle. Personal protective equipment required includes safety glasses, safety steel toed boots, hard hats, and safety vests are mandatory. Safety goggles and neoprene gloves may be required when working with vehicle fluids (e.g., antifreeze, oil, cleaners). Required to be trained in Road Worker Safety once a year.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Follow company safety policies in both the shop and the field.
  • Assist members of the maintenance team in shops when not moving trucks.
  • Maintain clean workspace and monitor inventory levels to ensure adequate resources to perform required tasks.
  • Repair and maintain field vehicles, Rail bound, HI Rail and YTV and related equipment/components, perform field order repairs, inspection, adjustments and troubleshoots maintenance issues.
  • Report/record the condition of vehicles. (Audits)
  • Fabrication and modification of new or existing equipment when required.
  • Ensure vehicle & equipment meets safety and quality compliance standards, participate in safety, health, and environmental programs.
  • Perform maintenance related special projects as required.
  • Ensure all work is completed in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Perform vehicle audits and log SDMS or Fleet Software.
  • Work under limited supervision following procedures to complete assigned tasks.
  • Diagnose and repair controls systems, hydraulic systems, and electrical repairs.
  • Carriage component repairs and routine maintenance.
  • Kubota and hydraulic generator repairs.
  • Respond to service calls and emergency breakdowns.
  • Conduct routine safety checks on all vehicles and equipment.
  • Complete paperwork associated with repairs, parts, and accounts for time spent on the repairs.
  • Identify and complete repairs identified on Vehicle audits.
  • Relocate units in need of repair and spare units as needed in order to maintain operational readiness.
  • Willingness to travel from unit to unit as needed performing preventative maintenance on Sperry carriages and HI Rail gear.
  • Willingness to become Certified in HI rail inspections.
  • Willingness to assist with GPS system installs and troubleshooting.
  • Willingness to cross train with Systems Support group to assist with light systems work.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: High School Diploma/GED.
  • 2 years electrical experience.
  • 2 years truck mechanical experience.
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams and assembly drawings.
  • Mechanical experience with work equipment or heavy trucks.
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL B) or equivalent (an asset but not required).
  • Skills/Competencies: Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Maintain a relationship with the customer and follow up on all customer complaints. Always maintain a professional and positive attitude toward employees and customers.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Reports to Assigned facility. (TBD) Will be asked to fill in at other shops to cover vacations.
  • Travel for maintenance related issues and truck relocation can require up to 50% travel.

SAFETY:

  • Adhere to all company safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Report any safety violations or fault conditions to supervisor.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $25.00-$35.00 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
