Position Details Posting Summary Competition Number 20240407SS Position Title SPAN 111-991: Introductory Spanish I-Fall 2024 Faculty/Department Faculty of Arts Unit Arts-International Languages Employee Group URFA CUPE 5791 Job Family Category Sessional Number of Vacancies 1 Position Summary This course is for students with little or no Spanish experience. The course focuses on the acquisition of basic vocabulary in a variety of areas and an understanding of basic grammar, aiming to develop skills in reading, writing, oral comprehension and oral expression. Instructors are expected to lecture on these topics and to carry out effective activities and testing strategies to lead to mastery of the material. Instructors will carry out written and oral exams during the semester, as well as written and oral final exams. Content covered and standards of assessment are established by the Department, and are common to other sections of the class; instructors are expected to follow these parameters Position Requirements Minimum of a B.A., ideally in Spanish, but possibly in a related field. Native or near-native fluency in Spanish, as well as in English. Candidates must be familiar with university credit courses and programs in Spanish, or failing that, in another language other than English. Preference will be given to candidates with teaching experience, ideally at the university level, ideally teaching courses for credit in a second or foreign language. Candidates must have an excellent understanding of, and ability to explain, Spanish grammar. Candidates should have experience in the development of rigorous testing methods to assess student progress. Only successful candidates will be contacted. Physical Demands Pay Grade Faculty Sessional Salary Range per URFA Collective Agreement Status Term Work Hours This is an in-person course, scheduled on Tues/Thurs, from 5:30 p.m.-6:45 p.m. There is one associated lab (oral practice) which is scheduled online that the instructor will carry out. Besides the responsibility of carrying out lectures, labs and activities during this set class time, work hours are flexible, including the preparation of classes and exams, marking, and holding office hours to allow for student consultation.
