Claims Support Program Project Manager [Remote, Canada | 24 months contract]


About the project: First Nations Child and Family Services and Jordan’s Principle Class Action

In fall of 2023, we are expecting the Federal Court to approve the First Nations Child and Family Services, Jordan’s Principle, and Trout Class Settlement Agreement, which claims that from April 1, 1991 until March 31, 2022, Canada discriminated against First Nations children living on reserve or in the Yukon who were removed from their homes by child welfare agencies and placed in out-of-home care. The class action also claims that between April 1, 1991 and November 2, 2017, Canada failed to provide (or delayed in providing) essential services to First Nations children who had a confirmed need for such essential services. This treatment discriminated against the children and broke a legal rule known as Jordan’s Principle.

Castlemain’s mandate in implementing the FNCFS Jordan’s Principle Navigation Program is to assist in providing navigational supports to Class Members in the Claims Process as outlined out in the Settlement Agreement Schedule I, Framework for Supports for Claimants in Compensation Process in a culturally safe and trauma informed way. Our guiding objectives are to ensure that every Claimant has the opportunity to access, understand, and respond to the Settlement Agreement notice, as well as receive the necessary assistance for completing and submitting their claims. Furthermore, we are dedicated to ensuring that Claimants are well-informed about the wellness support and resources available to them.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Support the Claims Support Project Lead and Co-Lead with creating and managing tools and timelines for the project.
  • Create work plans, gantt charts, timelines, and task the rest of the project team.
  • Monitor project progress, ensuring deliverables align with the settlement's overall objectives.
  • Maintain effective communication and asses risks with the Claims Program's Project Lead and Co-Lead.

We’re looking for someone with:

  • 7+ years of experience in project management.
  • Strong knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture, history, and the impacts of (intergenerational) trauma.
  • In-depth understanding of colonial policies, discriminatory laws and the impacts of colonization on Indigenous peoples and communities.
  • Have an intermediate understanding of technology and various online platforms.
  • Understanding the governance structure of Indigenous communities.
  • Preferred or in-depth experience and understanding in Indigenous history, peoples and culture.
