Job Summary

As part of a collaborative team, you will work to support the integration of circular economy principles and advance waste management practices. Under the direction of the City of Mississauga’s Environmental Sustainability Supervisor, the Waste Management Coordinator will be responsible for supporting efforts within the City’s Circular Economy Roadmap, Corporate Zero Waste Strategy, and the Climate Change Action Plan. This individual will develop and coordinate projects to advance waste diversion, measure progress of the City’s diversion programs by tracking waste metrics, completing waste audits, and supporting litter efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Coordinate and implement cost-effective waste management systems that meet the goals/challenges identified in the City’s Circular Economy Roadmap, Corporate Zero Waste Strategy, and Climate Change Action Plan.
  2. Communicate corporate-wide waste management practices and operational standards to drive consistent implementation across the organization.
  3. Collaborate with other members of the Environment Section to develop education and outreach programs to promote awareness and participation.
  4. Coordinate and support the City’s Internal Waste Diversion Working Group and create and manage project controls such as data gathering, management, and analytical processes.
  5. Gather information for key performance indicators and metrics.
  6. Monitor, evaluate, and report program effectiveness.
  7. Complete waste audits and/or assessments to measure results for waste diversion at various facilities, parks, and roadside recycling containers.
  8. Provide technical oversight and guidance on solid waste programs and projects.
  9. Research and track waste management industry developments and trends, including, but not limited to, leading practices, benchmarks, new service providers, market conditions, emerging and innovative technology, and programs in other jurisdictions.
  10. Review waste diversion service provider invoices and complete payment using SAP Concur.
  11. Participate in relevant associations and working groups.
  12. Research and prepare reports, correspondence, and oral presentations for prospective community partners, client groups, and internal management team.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  1. Post-secondary degree from a recognized university or college in environmental studies, engineering, or a related field (a focus on waste management is preferred).
  2. Minimum of three (3) years of experience in waste management programs, ideally with experience in municipal solid waste management, waste reduction, recycling, composting, and disposal programs, technologies, and/or systems. Note that, in the absence of a post-secondary education in a relevant field, total years of experience should be six (6) years or more.
  3. Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, employees in other service areas responsible for waste management, internal and external customers (other City employees and the general public), regional partners, and provincial groups.
  4. Strong research, analytical, statistical, graphical, and numerical skills.
  5. Must have strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and research skills, including the ability to effectively handle concurrent projects strategically and creatively under deadlines.
  6. Knowledge of solid waste audit procedures and waste reduction work plans in compliance with government regulations.
  7. Knowledge of relevant Federal, Provincial, and Regional environmental laws, regulations, standards, guidelines, including local, regional, national and environmental initiatives/trends/developments.
  8. Excellent oral and written communication skills including strong presentation skills, report writing skills with the ability to liaise effectively with the public and outside agencies.
  9. Ability to work flexible hours including holidays, weekends, early mornings, and evenings as required (up to 35 hours per week).
  10. Some heavy lifting will be required (30-50lb work-related equipment).
  11. Demonstrated skill with Microsoft Office Suite applications and databases.
