Position Reports to:
Joyce Visser, Project Manager

Job Purpose:

To create databases and cartographic products of our surveys and of the resulting geophysical data for the purpose of assisting our clients in detection and delineation of economic ore deposits. Through the use of GIS software programs, design, develop and manage 2D and 3D database models, maps and figures of interpreted data for delivery to our clients. The applicant should be capable of sourcing, researching, selecting and evaluating map source data to be used in the preparation or revision of maps or analysis.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Compile and manipulate spatial data from a variety of sources using commercial, open source and internal software packages.
  • Utilize open source GIS for producing high quality maps and figures for interpretation by our geophysicists or delivery to our clients.
  • Utilize and develop a variety of scripts and programs to improve workplace efficiency.
  • Assist in the generation of 3D models for visualization in a 3D environment. SJ Geophysics currently utilizes Qgis and VTK.
  • Create KML and GPX files to assist with survey design and field logistics.
  • Assist in the processing of geophysical data sets from a variety of survey techniques, including large and small loop EM, mag, IP/resistivity and gravity.
  • Assist with field geophysical surveys in remote locations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

A GIS Technician/Analyst shall have a strong background in GIS, with a preferred applicant having experience applying their GIS knowledge in geophysics, geology, physics or earth and ocean science setting. Familiarity with QGIS is important for this position, as is an understanding of cartographic elements and utilizing them to produce visually appealing maps. Computer programming experience with python, SQL and GIS database development such as postGIS and Geopackage will be considered very strong asset.

In addition to formal post secondary education and or equivalent experience as a GIS Technician, an applicant must also possess:

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Able to simultaneously organize and manage tight timelines andmultiple priorities.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • An understanding of worker safety practices.
