About the Company -

ArcelorMittal Mining Segment is looking for a Biodiversity Manager, who will provide the leadership, direction, and strategy in biodiversity matters. The role is responsible for development of an overarching mining biodiversity strategy, aligned with Target 15 and other international frameworks (ICMM, IFC PS6, CSRD, IRMA, TNFD, SBTN). The role will lead a team to refresh the biodiversity components at the Canadian and Liberian sites and enhance the work by bringing in new aspects (i.E.:
roadmap to Nature Positive, eDNA etc.).

About the Role -

The Biodiversity Manager will lead a team of professionals and field staff and reports to the Head, ESG, at AM Mining. The Biodiversity Manager will:

  • Demonstrate leadership and commitment to the Group’s safety standards and values;
  • Lead and provide direction on biodiversity matters in consideration of project priorities, legal requirements and IFC standards;
  • Have oversight on the various studies and programs in Liberia and Canada;
  • Co-manage the design of necessary conservation programs to address biodiversity threats with sites;
  • Establish and maintain productive working relationships and representation with key internal and external biodiversity stakeholders including Corporate Sustainability, UNEP, CBD, TNFD, IUCN SGA, international NGO’s etc.;
  • Liaise with theMining Executive Team (MET) to ensure that biodiversity requirements are understood and integrated into project designs and scopes of work, having goals for Nature Positive etc.;
  • Ensure that sites’ Biodiversity Management Plans and Monitoring and Evaluation Plans are consistently implemented, and utilise monitoring to assess the preservation status of identified Critical Habitat/Species;
    review data and devise strategies for the MET
  • Lead the design and planning for mitigation of biodiversity and ecosystem service impacts to achieve no net loss of biodiversity.

Qualifications -

  • PhD or MSc in related to conservation, ecology, or other related environmental science;
  • >
    10 years’ experience in environment and biodiversity management;
  • A robust understanding of mining operations and/or exploration
  • Business fluency in English;
    French and/ou Portuguese considered an asset
  • Experience in designing, managing and implementing biodiversity and/or community offset initiatives;
  • Significant experience with threatened species and critical habitats, experience with effective mitigation measures;
  • Experience collaborating with external stakeholders to deliver positive environmental outcomes;
  • Experience successfully leading and managing a technical team of biodiversity specialists
  • Experience planning and delivering projects in alignment with mining industry risk management frameworks;
  • Robust experience working with social and cultural professionals to implement projects with both environmental and social outcomes (ideally in developing nations), including government and community capacity-building initiatives.
