Interim Head of Plant Operations (GM)

Reports To: Chief Operating Officer

Duration: 12 – months

Location: Hamilton, Canada

Our client is a Canadian consumer goods manufacturing company and a leader in its field. They are seeking an Interim Head of Plant Operations to lead a change initiative within one of their key plants. The interim leader will evaluate the current state of the plant and develop and execute a plan to drive improvements in compliance, health & safety, culture and process excellence. This position involves P&L budget accountability, strategic planning and close collaboration with various senior stakeholders across the broader business. The successful candidate will ensure this important plant becomes a model of professionalism, engagement and efficiency.

Key Accountabilities:

Conduct assessment of plant operations, people, policies and systems and recommend improvements to be implemented. Coach and mentor the manufacturing team to become a more efficient producer, encourage continuous improvement and serve as a business partner across the organization. Monitor compliance with Health and Safety procedures and takes appropriate action to deal with non-conformances, providing input for continuous improvement actions. Lead, coach and mentor managers and supervisors—ultimately ensuring compliance, quality, accuracy and efficient production of product lines. Manage inventory of materials and finished goods to ensure the highest possible service levels with controlled operating costs and delivery performance. Oversee and optimize supply chain processes, ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery of goods and services. Identify and mitigate operational risks, ensuring business continuity and compliance with regulations; Implement and maintain quality control measures to ensure the delivery of high-quality products or services. Oversee the coordination of daily production schedules. Review supply contracts, relationships, negotiate price and supply terms. Accountable for the overall efficiency and effectiveness of operational processes. Collaborate with department heads to ensure seamless coordination and integration of operations across different functions. Develop and manage operational budgets, ensuring cost-effectiveness and financial sustainability. Lead and motivate a high-performing operations team, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement. Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure and improve operational performance.

Competencies and Requirements:

In-depth knowledge of operational best practices, process optimization, and supply chain management and the ability to implement process improvements and drive operational excellence. Strong strategic thinking skills to align operational initiatives with organizational objectives. Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Operations Management, or a related field. Director-level or above experience in operations management. Excellent leadership, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills; Influential and inspirational leader. General knowledge of environmental health and safety regulations. Experience in P&L budget management and financial oversight. Familiarity with highly regulated environments, health/safety and compliance requirements.
