The Department of Surgery, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary is seeking an academic Otolaryngologist – Head & Neck Surgeon for a Contingent Term academic position at the Assistant Professor level.

Qualifications

Qualifications include an MD and membership with the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in the specialty of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery (or equivalent), plus completion of at least a one-year post-residency fellowship in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology. Eligibility for licensure in the province of Alberta is mandatory. Additional research education at the PhD level is required. The successful applicant will have an established track record of excellence in clinical epidemiology and health services research, with a program of research focusing on patient-reported outcomes.

The successful applicant will dedicate 50% of their time to research-related activities. Applicants should demonstrate a record of peer-reviewed publications, including publications as first or senior author. They should have a track record of peer-reviewed funding at the local and, preferably, national level. Future success in receiving external funding at the level of Tri-Council or equivalent peer-reviewed National/International organization should be a realistic goal. Educating, supervising, mentoring, and training medical students, residents, graduate students, and postgraduate students is an important part of this position, as is academic engagement and leadership. Candidates will be expected to show evidence of collaboration and leadership in research and education, including involvement in, and preferably, leadership of multi-disciplinary research teams.

The successful candidate will also provide subspecialty head and neck surgical oncology clinical services in collaboration with the three existing head and neck surgeons and members of the Section of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery. Opportunities in all areas of head and neck surgery including transoral laser microsurgery and microvascular reconstructive surgery are available. Clinical activities will be performed at the Foothills Medical Centre, Richmond Road Diagnostic and Treatment Centre (ambulatory clinics), and the regional Cancer Centre.

The successful applicant will lead an established and high-performing clinical/translational head and neck research program; the Ohlson Research initiative (ORI). The successful applicant will serve as the Executive Director of the Ohlson Research Initiative. The ORI is an endowed research program within the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute and includes molecular oncology and health services research scientists as well as support staff. Associated tumour banks and prospective clinical databases are maintained and available.
