Overview

As the Building Systems Lead, you will be responsible for providing leadership, support, and coordination for the development, integration, standardization, and operation of the building systems used throughout the corporation. These systems, comprised of thousands of individual components, are integrated and managed to provide optimal occupant comfort, minimize energy and operating costs, and to control risks to both personnel and the corporation’s physical and information assets.

You will also be accountable for optimizing systems by providing strategic direction and performing research to provide advanced technical support to ensure optimal system performance and availability. The Building Systems Lead ensures systems are installed, commissioned, monitored, maintained and tested following industry best practices and legislation for networks, personal safety, physical security and building systems. You will play an essential role in planning and managing systems installations and modifications. The position monitors the effectiveness of current building systems and provides recommendations for improvements to provide the corporation with the most cost effective and energy efficient solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Ensures that monitoring, inspections, maintenance and repairs on existing systems are performed efficiently according to regulations (i.e. National Building Code) and that all work is appropriately documented and archived.
  • Maintains formal agreements and relationships with vendors to ensure support is available when needed.
  • Oversees the inventory management of corporate assets such as spare components to support system repairs and minimize downtime.
  • Ensures systems are protected from environmental damage and have redundant power and communications available to ensure continued functionality.
  • Ensures that system software, configurations and databases are regularly backed up onto the MPI network.
  • Participates in project and facility planning providing expertise to ensure that building security and life safety needs and standards are considered, addressed and integrated into new construction or renovations.
  • Ensures that all planned systems development is strategically conducted so that new systems are integrated with existing systems with minimal effort and cost.
  • Researches service requirements and develops technical specifications and evaluation criteria for the purchase of building systems, components, software or technical services.
  • Ensures systems are capturing operational and performance trend data. Reviews, assesses, and documents system performance.
  • Ensures that building systems development follows network communication protocols to ensure system interoperability and that leading manufacturers and product lines are used for optimal flexibility with regard to integration.
  • Researches technologies and trends, evaluates, tests and recommends new systems and equipment and associated software for incorporation into the Corporation's physical security and building control and safety infrastructure.
  • Participates in the preparation of budgets including special projects, maintenance programs and lifecycle replacement estimates.
  • Develops and maintains detailed technical documentation for all building system architecture and connections with building systems, IT networks and telecommunications networks. Ensures all wiring, panels and devices are appropriately labelled and servicing documents maintained.
Qualifications
  • Post secondary education in Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technologies, Building Automation Controls, Applied Sciences or a related discipline.
  • Class M electrical licence and certification to obtain electrical permits.
  • City of Winnipeg Class C electrical contractors licence.
  • Niagara 4 Security certification.
  • Milestone Video Management System (VMS) certification or equivalent enterprise Video management system.
  • Digital Monitoring Products Certification.
  • Seven years of progressive experience in a technical role within the security and building systems industry, including experience in the installations, configuration, integration and management of IP Video management systems, alarm systems, access control systems, building control systems and network and voice communications.
