Job Description:

Department Overview :

In this role, you will join a dynamic and collegial team of lawyers in the TD Legal Department. You will support TD Insurance with a focus on life, health, and creditor insurance, both group and individual. Your responsibilities will encompass a range of regulatory and commercial legal matters and will allow you to develop your legal skills while working with a wide variety of partners across insurance and the bank.

Job Description :

Reporting to a Senior Counsel, you will provide legal advice that is integrated with your clients' strategies and objectives. This involves advice relating to legal and regulatory issues impacting the insurance-related business operations of the bank, including products, policy documents and associated collateral, scripts, marketing initiatives, and omnichannel distribution. You will be required to work closely with various business units, building and maintaining excellent, collaborative working relationships, in order to become a trusted advisor to your clients.

Job Requirements :

  • Law degree and member in good standing of a provincial bar in Canada.

  • Up to 2 years practice as a lawyer with a major law firm or within an in-house corporate legal environment, preferably with exposure to the financial services industry – recent calls to the bar will be considered.

  • Knowledge and experience regarding insurance law will be considered an asset.

  • Independent thinker with excellent judgment who also has strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively in a team.

  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with business partners.

  • Practical, business focused and solution-oriented with excellent drafting and communication skills

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment and manage multiple deadlines and priorities with attention to risk.

In addition, you will:

  • Provide consistent and sound advice, clearly and concisely communicating legal issues and options to business partners

  • Develop an understanding of business partners' business needs and concerns by asking clear and appropriate follow-up questions, and providing direct feedback and answers

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders and negotiate business solutions in consideration of broader enterprise implications

  • Identify risks and counsel business partners on potential implications, escalate non-standard, high risk activities as necessary; act as an escalation point and be accountable for own work

  • Identify and recommend opportunities to enhance productivity, effectiveness and operational efficiency; keep others informed and stay abreast of emerging trends, practices and procedures

  • Interpret business challenges and the industry environment, recommend course of action to improve products, processes or services

  • Conduct internal and external research projects; support the development and delivery of communications to management or broader audience

  • Participate fully as a member of the team, promote team effectiveness and contribute to a positive work environment
