The Role

We are seeking a highly-skilled, entrepreneurial, and experienced Senior Carbon Storage Engineer to join our new carbon removals project as we strive to combat climate change by developing innovative CO2 storage solutions.

You will lead a new initiative to develop a CO2 sequestration project at scale in Quebec, the first of its kind in Eastern Canada, designed to serve not only Deep Sky's own direct carbon capture facilities, but also to accelerate the development of regional industrial carbon capture more generally. You will be building partnerships with industrial partners, government and local communities, and building your own team of world-class experts. As a Senior Carbon Storage Engineer, you will play a key role in selecting and characterizing storage sites, designing and optimizing storage processes, and implementing novel CO2 storage methods tailored to the local natural environment including injection into deep saline aquifers and carbon mineralization. Your expertise in subsurface CO2 sequestration and geologic storage will be critical in ensuring the success of our carbon removal initiatives.

Responsibilities
  • Identify, evaluate, and select suitable storage sites for CO2 sequestration, considering factors such as geological formations, reservoir capacity, integrity, and containment potential.
  • Characterize potential storage sites using advanced geological, geophysical, and geochemical methods to assess their suitability for CO2 storage.
  • Design and optimize storage processes, including injection and monitoring strategies, to maximize CO2 storage capacity, efficiency, and containment.
  • Develop and implement novel CO2 storage methods tailored to the specific natural environment, such as geologically tailored injection techniques, mineral carbonation, or other innovative approaches.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including geologists, geophysicists, reservoir engineers, and environmental scientists, to integrate technical requirements and environmental considerations into the storage design process.
  • Conduct numerical simulations and modeling studies to predict and evaluate CO2 behavior, migration, and long-term storage performance in different geological formations.
  • Monitor and analyze data from CO2 injection and storage operations to assess system performance, identify potential issues, and propose remedial measures.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements, research, and industry practices related to subsurface CO2 sequestration and carbon storage technologies.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to project teams, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies regarding subsurface CO2 sequestration and storage processes.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in geology, petroleum engineering, geophysics, or a related field. Advanced degree (Master's or Ph.D.) is preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in subsurface CO2 sequestration and geologic storage, with a focus on characterizing storage sites and designing storage processes.
  • Strong knowledge of geological formations, reservoir engineering principles, and subsurface fluid flow.
  • Experience with geologic modeling software (e.g., Petrel, Eclipse, CMG) and reservoir simulation tools.
  • Familiarity with numerical modeling techniques for fluid flow and CO2 behavior in porous media.
  • In-depth understanding of CO2 injection techniques, monitoring strategies, and wellbore integrity.
  • Proven track record of implementing successful carbon storage projects, preferably in diverse geological settings.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulations, industry standards, and best practices for subsurface CO2 sequestration.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex geological and engineering challenges and propose effective solutions.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities, with a demonstrated capacity to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.
