Small Engine Mechanic
Full-Time Permanent: Operations
Salary Range: 28.73 To 28.73 (CAD) Hourly

Located at the head of Lake Ontario and within the municipalities of Burlington and Hamilton, Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) is the largest botanical garden in Canada and one of the nation's earliest nature sanctuaries. RBG dedicates its expertise in horticulture, conservation, science and education to connect people, plants and place for the purpose of nurturing and preserving healthy growing life on our planet.

The small engine mechanic is responsible for the performance of routine maintenance on all RBG fleet vehicles including but not limited to cars, vans, and trucks as well as small engine and seasonal equipment such as tractors, loaders, snowplows, lawn mowers, chainsaws, golf carts, boat motors, etc.

Roles and Responsibilities
- Develops, regularly monitors and executes a preventative maintenance program to service and maintain vehicles and equipment.
- Repairs and maintains all RBG fleet vehicles and small engine equipment using manufacturers user guides and industry best practices and standards to ensure that all pieces of equipment are maintained to maximum operating capabilities.
- Operate equipment for testing purposes or diagnosis.
- Maintain accurate vehicle service records and repair costs to recommend fleet/equipment acquisitions and decommissioning.
- Utilize data accumulated from past repairs, applicable costs and expected lifecycle to establish budget forecasts for fleet and equipment maintenance.
- Familiarity with manufacturer's diagnostic troubleshooting tools used in the automotive trade.
- Utilize and maintain RBG's ProFuel software for the purpose of fuel management, and to generate reports to be used for cost analysis purposes.
- Maintain an inventory of shop supplies and replacement parts with consideration of budgetary requirements.
- Liaise with the third party to clarify needs and negotiate the work required when external maintenance or repairs is required.

Qualifications
- The successful candidate must possess a valid Small Motor Maintenance Mechanic License or equivalent and demonstrated and proven experience working on gasoline and diesel-powered small engines, vehicles, hydraulics and transmissions.
- Valid Class D driver's license with a clean drivers abstract required for the insurance purposes.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite for the purposes of written communication, report preparation and to document preventive maintenance schedules.
- Proven experience utilizing automotive diagnosis tools to troubleshoot vehicle problems is required.
- Practical use of ProFuel software or a similar fuel management system is required.
- Demonstrated experience managing a budget and preparing reports for management to make informed decisions on whether equipment should be repaired or replaced.
- Critical thinking and problem resolution skills required to resolve mechanical problems.
- Position requires a well-developed attention to detail to ensure completeness and accuracy of maintenance prior to returning the asset to the location where it is utilized.
- Well developed oral and written communication to interact with a broad range of staff, suppliers, and vendors to gather and verify data and information, request third party servicing when appropriate, order supplies, resolve discrepancies, and aid in asset maintenance.
- Organizational skills required to prioritize work activities, ensure maintenance is completed in a timely manner, prepare standard reports to support cost analysis of repair vs replacement and to make informed decisions on operation of assets.

Working Conditions
- Mechanic shop environment that includes exposure to contaminants such as antifreeze, chemical degreasers, and oils.
- Working in cramped spaces to access vehicle parts inside or underneath trucks and equipment.
- Required to stand for extended periods of time and comfortably lift to 50 lbs.
- Indoor and outdoor working environment with exposure to seasonal weather conditions.
- Ambient room temperatures, lighting and traditional office equipment as found in a typical office environment.
