Who We Are
We are a Toronto-based amateur jazz choir that has been in existence since 2016. It is an auditioned group, currently with 12 members. All members are experienced choral singers, most of whom can and do sing solos and all of whom read music fluently.
Members are expected to come to rehearsals prepared.

Our goals as a group and for our director

  • To prepare and present two concerts a year (December and June).
  • To continue to improve our singing technique alone and as a group, as well as to improve our sound and blend.
  • To be challenged with interesting arrangements.

Music director’s role

Duties: select music, run rehearsals, prepare practice tracks, lead concerts, and attend executive committee meetings (over Zoom) approximately once a month.

Remuneration: $5000 per year (August 1 – May 31) plus two concert fees ($400 each).

Rehearsals: Fridays 10:30-12:30 from mid-September to the end of May, with some days off on holidays and in December. We do not have an accompanist for rehearsals; we work with backing tracks or a capella or with the director playing.

Location: 96 Barker Avenue in East York.

Repertoire: jazz standards with SATB or SAB arrangements. The tunes we are currently preparing include “Like Someone In Love,” “Tuxedo Junction,” “Choo Choo Ch’Boogie,” “In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning,” “Java Jive,” an Ellington medley, and Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Triste.” While we play occasional rock classics or pop songs, our focus is the jazz repertoire

Concerts: two per year, one in early December, another in early June. We hire a pianist for the concert and usually bass and drums as well.
