Reporting to the Manager of Rehabilitation and Grey Bruce District Stroke Services, the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) is responsible for providing speech and language services to referred stroke survivors within the LHIN designated boundaries of Grey and Bruce Counties. The SLP role will focus on swallowing disorders, cognitive impairment and attaining optimal communication and supported conversation abilities that relate to fostering independence in the home and a return to activities that are important to the client. The SLP will also provide client-specific consultation and education/training/ in-services related to stroke rehabilitation for service providers, caregivers and families. The SLP is a member of a collaborative interprofessional team delivering an innovative rehabilitation service to help stroke survivors and their caregivers reach their optimal level of recovery in their own home and community.

Skills/Abilities/Qualifications

Required:

  • Member in good standing of the College of Audiologists and Speech and Language Pathologists of Ontario
  • Master’s degree or equivalent in Speech Language Pathology
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification
  • Clinical expertise and experience in stroke rehabilitation and demonstrated knowledge of current stroke rehabilitation best practices including management of dysphagia
  • Experience in clinical assessment of swallowing
  • Experience in working in a community setting
  • Experience in working in an interprofessional team with a demonstrated ability to practice effectively in an inter-professional collaborative environment.
  • Understanding of the role and responsibilities of varied rehabilitation professionals in the provision of stroke rehabilitation
  • Working knowledge and experience with theories and principles of guiding adult learning and patient self-management approaches
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, problem solving and innovation skills
  • Proven flexibility and a high level of initiative
  • Willingness to flex time and responsibilities to meet patient needs
  • Ability to work with and direct support personnel
  • Appreciation of resource utilization and comfortable working in a virtual environment
  • Demonstrated excellent ability to utilize Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word,
  • A valid Ontario driver’s license and a reliable insured vehicle; Willing to travel throughout Grey Bruce
  • Ability to work all shifts, including weekends; ability for multi-site coverage when required
  • Recent satisfactory performance and attendance records
