HOURS

Monday to Friday, 30 hours per week. The schedule is negotiable and flexible.

This position requires the ability to work flexible hours based on operational needs

COMPENSATION

$25.00 / hour – depending on skills and experience

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Vancouver Island Therapeutic Community program is located on the traditional and ancestral lands of the Snuneymuxw First Nation. ROLE PURPOSE

A part time position (30 hours a week) cooking for twenty-four adult males who reside in a Supportive Recovery Program. The Cook will be responsible for developing and preparing meals for the residents and will prepare a menu plan in accordance with the Canadian Food Guide. The Cook may also provide vocational training working in collaboration with residents as needed.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Develops and executes a menu created in collaboration with the Program Manager to meet the needs of the clients, while ensuring that meals are nutritious. May consult and prepare special diets or special event meals in consultation with the staff.
  • Prepares and cooks complete meals from whole foods with safe food handling, preparation safety, and follows all VIHA health standards.
  • Responsible for the purchasing and ordering of food items necessary for the preparation of meals. Will work with the Program Manager to ensure purchases are within approved budget limits.
  • May provide vocational training to clients with regard to a variety of elements of basic cooking, as well as food safety practices, and information covered in the Kitchen Orientation Package.
  • Maintains good communication and relationships with service and food providers.
  • Role model behavioral expectations of dress, daily work habits, interpersonal communication, positive attitudes, temperament, emotional self-management and adherence to facility rules.
  • Adhere to professional guidelines in respect to client confidentiality.
  • Ensure that adequate client information is maintained between the Connective staff, and other social service agencies when deemed necessary.
  • Attend appropriate staff training sessions, as well as team meetings.
  • Has a flexible schedule to provide coverage which may include weekends.

SERVICES PROVIDED

  • Agency Participation : Participates in agency meetings at Connective; participates in Agency and relevant Team activities and in-service training as required for the position.
  • Case Management : Recognizes potential behavior changes with clients, analyzes circumstances and dynamics with sound judgment, documents unusual incidents and informs all members of the treatment team
  • Best practice : Stays informed of best Foodsafe practices and provides a quality of service to reflect these. Maintain all general systems of reporting and communication to the standards of the Society. Has full knowledge of the Canadian Food Guide, and has experience managing and working within a food budget, as well as utilizing community resources

This position requires good organizational skills, time management, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Food safe level 1 is required. Food safe level 2 is an asset
  • Completion of Culinary Arts Certificate is required
  • First aid level 1 certification is required.
  • One-year previous experience as a cook, managing a kitchen is an asset

  • Ability to show empathy, patience and understanding to build good working relationships with clients who may be initially reluctant.
  • Able to assess situations based on individual client's needs, program needs, agency policy and Connective guidelines e.g. duty to report.
  • Able to make adjustments to meal plans as needed
  • Able to be non-judgmental and committed to supporting people in difficult circumstances.
  • Able to demonstrate strong boundaries and appropriate rolemodelling
  • Demonstrated skills in observing the social and psychological environment of the TC, increasing resident awareness by providing feedback on behaviour.
  • Keen awareness of issues facing diverse communities, including systemic barriers and issues stemming from colonization.
  • Enhance service delivery to our Indigenous Clients within Connective through shared resources.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to successfully complete a Vulnerable Persons Criminal Records Check
  • Ability to successfully pass a reference check
  • Current Emergency First Aid Certificate
  • Covid-19 Vaccinated
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Driver’s abstract
  • Personal transportation that is in good repair, insured for business up to $1,000,000 for liability, and which can be used to transport clients
  • Knowledge of Community resources
  • Have ability to use wireless communication tools

WORKING CHALLENGES (Occupational Health and Safety)

There can be frequent exposure to adverse environmental working conditions. These can include verbal and physical aggression, which require safety precautions and a calm perspective in approaching the situation. There is an expectation of a moderate level of physical exertion in daily cooking activities, and recreation opportunities.
