Job Description:

As a key member of IMAX’s product development team, the Mechanical Engineering Manager leads the Mechanical Design team both technically and professionally. This role ensures IMAX’s mechanical products meet high-quality standards, with a focus on management (30%) and design (70%).

What You’ll Be Doing:

  1. Lead and mentor a team of Mechanical Engineers and Designers.
  2. Participate in headcount planning, budgeting, and product roadmap discussions.
  3. Develop and maintain metrics for efficient resource utilization.
  4. Oversee engineering resource usage and progress.
  5. Manage the mechanical product development process and suggest improvements.
  6. Collaborate with vendors to ensure components are manufactured as designed.
  7. Create, approve, revise, and maintain design documentation.
  8. Draft specifications and participate in design reviews.
  9. Innovate design approaches to keep IMAX at the forefront of technology.
  10. Provide mechanical engineering support to Procurement, Quality, Manufacturing, Installation, and Technical Services.
  11. Collaborate with Optical, Electrical, and Software teams to ensure robust system architectures.
  12. Build and right-size the mechanical team, identifying projects for contract work as needed.
  13. Address issues and improve IMAX’s products with the cross-functional team.
  14. Triage requests to address those with the most business impact first.
  15. Negotiate and compromise to gain buy-in from the cross-functional team.
  16. Identify and improve deficiencies in product development processes.

What We’re Looking For:

  1. 3+ years in Mechanical Engineering leadership roles.
  2. 7-10 years of hands-on experience in precision mechanical design.
  3. Proficient in GD&T principles for complex parts specification.
  4. 5+ years using Solidworks or similar tools, including PDM systems.
  5. Ability to document mechanical product requirements, designs, and implementations.
  6. Excellent understanding of weldments, coatings, platings, and precision mechanical engineering.
  7. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  8. Experience following a formal design/development process.
  9. Excellent time management and multitasking skills.
  10. Experience with opto-mechanical components, high power laser systems, and thermal design considerations is a plus.
  11. Familiarity with optics, regulatory requirements, electrical, and embedded software is beneficial.
  12. Ability to work with a multi-disciplinary design team.
  13. Quality mindset and passion for continuous improvement.
  14. PEng designation is highly desired.
