ABOUT NATIVE WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION OF CANADA


The Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC) is a national Indigenous organization representing the political voices of Indigenous Women, Girls, Two-Spirit, Transgender, and Gender-Diverse+ (WG2STGD+) People in Canada.

NWAC is inclusive of First Nations - on
- and off-reserve, status, non-status, and disenfranchised
  • Inuit, and Métis. An aggregate of Indigenous women's organizations from across the country, NWAC was founded on a collective goal to enhance, promote, and foster social, economic, cultural, and political wellbeing of Indigenous WG2STGD+ People in their respective communities and Canadian societies.


Since 1974, NWAC has established strong and lasting governance structures, decision-making processes, financial policies and procedures, and networks, to achieve its overall mission, vision, and goals.

Today, NWAC engages in national and international advocacy aimed at legislative and policy reforms to promote equality for Indigenous WG2STGD+ and LGBTQQAI+ People.

Through advocacy, policy, and legislative analysis, NWAC works to preserve Indigenous culture and advance the well-being of all Indigenous WG2STGD+ People, as well as their families and communities.


NWAC works on a variety of issues, including employment, labour and business, health, violence prevention and safety, justice and human rights, environment, early learning childcare, and international affairs.


ABOUT THE CHIEF OF STAFF


Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Chief of Staff is responsible for ensuring comprehensive organizational and administrative support to the CEO.

The Chief of Staff will oversee the Executive Assistant to the CEO to ensure the day-to-day administrative tasks are managed and carried out.

This position is responsible for managing the goals, policies, and procedures for the organization to operate more efficiently and in alignment with its vision.

The Chief of Staff is also responsible for building and maintaining excellent working relationships with all stakeholders, including all NWAC executives.


The Chief of Staff works directly with the CEO, the Executive Assistant, and leaders of other departments and requires an organized, thoughtful, and creative communicator who can work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

The work of this position is a critical factor in the overall performance of NWAC. This exciting opportunity will make a difference in the lives of Indigenous women in Canada and around the world.

KEY LEADERSHIP ACCOUNTABILITIES
General Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and overall management of all administrative functions for the CEO, oversee workflow, troubleshoot, and provide assistance where required
  • Research, prioritize, and follow up on highlevel incoming issues and concerns addressed to the CEO, including those of a sensitive or confidential nature and determine an appropriate course of action, referral, or response
  • Analyze and prioritize incoming and outgoing briefs, memoranda, submissions, and reports and prepare and present to the CEO for review and approval
  • Oversee preparation of meeting agendas and briefings, maintain meeting notes, and arrange for implementation of action items and motions of the Board of Directors
  • Liaise with internal departments and other organizations and associations on behalf of the CEO
  • Draft and review the outgoing correspondence and short reports for accuracy and in accordance with the instructions provided
  • Work closely with the CEO and Executive Assistant to keep them wellinformed of upcoming commitments and responsibilities and follow up appropriately
  • Ensure the Executive Assistant provides exceptional administrative support to alleviate the CEO of routine administrative details, including review of incoming correspondence; compilation of reports; sending meeting invitations, preparation of presentations; preparation of expense reports; completion of scheduling and monitoring; and travel plans
Government And Stakeholder Relations

  • Liaise with provincial and federal political authorities etc. on behalf of the CEO
  • Manage staff in the following areas of Government Relations, International and Parliamentary Relations, and Special Advisor to the CEO
Governance Support

  • Work with the CEO to manage processes and relay such information to the Executive Assistant
  • Maintain a detailed knowledge of the governance processes and protocols of the Association, including indepth knowledge of bylaws, Societies Act, and other statutory requirements for nonprofit organizations
  • Oversee the maintenance of all required governance documentation, including agendas, preparing meeting materials and packages, meeting calendars, minutes, action items, and motions
  • Ensure the proper organization of meetings and teleconferences, including coordinating meeting locations, guest room accommodations, meals, and travel
