Purpose

The Data Engineer will join the Brain-Heart Interconnectome (BHI) Research Program team, a $109 million initiative funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF). This innovative program will transform the prevention and treatment of brain-heart interconnected conditions, improving the health and quality of life of Canadians and people worldwide.

In this role, the Data Engineer will primarily be responsible for leveraging their technical expertise to liaise with a team of programmers and developers from partner institutions for the joint development and implementation of the Brain-Heart Collaborative Data Portal. The portal is a consortium effort led by a range of partner organizations, designed to provide a user-friendly data platform with centralized access to curated brain-heart data, data resources, analytic tools and open science archiving capabilities. The portal will provide end users with cutting-edge data curation (e.g., access to multiple data sources, linkage capabilities, and analytic tools), a data repository, and data management and governance resources. The role would be ideal for someone with knowledge of the Canadian academic research and data landscape

Reporting to the Chairs of the Brain-Heart Collaborative Portal and working closely with the BHI Data Portal Steering Committee, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) IT team and the technical team based out of McGill University, the Data Engineer will contribute to the technical operations of the portal, be responsible for the integration of new data sources and analytical tools and deliver on key implementation output for the CFREF program. The Data Engineer will assess the technical feasibility, provide innovative solutions, and align technical initiatives with long-term business objectives to contribute to the Brain-Heart Collaborative Portal's strategic direction, strategies, and goals. The Data Engineer will also facilitate collaboration between diverse organizations, data sources, and stakeholder groups by acting as a technical liaison.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to portal development and maintaining database structures and data pipelines to ensure efficient data storage, analysis, and retrieval.
  • Integrate new data sources, analytical tools, and functionalities for the portal, ensuring effective data management for seamless operation and analysis.
  • Proficient in handling various imaging data formats, including DICOM, and experience in managing and utilizing medical image storage systems such as PACS.
  • Determine and implement the technical architecture and infrastructure requirements for the portal ensuring security, performance, and scalability.
  • Develop Open Science dashboards to enhance transparency and accessibility of research data.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements, automation, and enhancements to optimize portal performance and user experience.
  • Utilize programming languages and tools to understand the data requirements of stakeholders and design solutions that facilitate secure data access and sharing.

Mandatory qualifications

  • Master’s degree (e.g., Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science or degree in a related field)
  • Requires minimum 4 years of relevant experience as a Data Engineer
  • Proficient in Python, R, SQL, Tableau, and Power BI

Desirable qualifications

  • Knowledge of the academic research ecosystem in Canada
  • Proficient in containerization technologies with hands-on experience using tools such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience implementing data governance systems or tools
  • Certification in relevant cloud technologies like AWS or Microsoft Azure
  • Fluency in French is an asset but not mandatory

  • Excellent interpersonal relations and communications skills, sound judgment, and ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Ability to work under pressure and organize his/her work to meet target objectives and deadlines.
  • Some flexibility in working hours, in addition to accepting occasional travel.

Work environment

This is a hybrid position based at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI). It is expected that the successful candidate will be onsite at UOHI approximately two days per week and may work remotely when not at UOHI or travel to partner sites.
