CP Planning is a fast growing non-profit practicing a human rights approach to community planning. Through this approach, multi-sector and multi-disciplinary collaborations guide for land use planning reform that upholds the economic, social, and cultural rights of marginalized people to have access to good housing, good jobs, an adequate standard of living, and cultural expression.

Founded in 2017, CP Planning designs, implements, and advises on national, city-wide, and neighbourhood specific affordable housing strategies to protect and increase affordable housing supply.

Junior Community Planner (Student Volunteer)

Applications due: Accepted on ongoing basis

Compensation: Volunteer role, no compensation or honorarium

Commitment: Minimum 5 hrs/week

The CP Planning team is seeking a Jr. Community Planner who is a dedicated and enthusiastic student, passionate about community planning and social justice. This volunteer position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in urban planning, affordable housing initiatives, and community development.

The ideal candidate is pursuing studies in urban planning, sociology, community development, public policy, or a related field and is eager to contribute to the mission of CP Planning to support marginalized communities.

Location

Hybrid. Most of the work can be done remote; however, volunteers may be asked if they are able to attend in person engagements.

Responsibilities

Coordination

  • Support brainstorming sessions and workshops by taking notes and organizing ideas into actionable plans. 
  • Support the design and facilitation of discussions and planning sessions within the organization and with collaborators. 
  • Prepare and distribute agendas, meeting minutes, and other relevant documents.
  • Help collect and organize data from surveys, interviews, and other sources.

Knowledge Sharing

  • Support research and analysis to inform support to community stakeholders including non-profits, governments, developers, and other stakeholders.
  • Help prepare surveys, presentations, reports, and other materials to gather and communicate information with diverse stakeholders.
Qualifications

Required

  • Enrolled in urban planning, sociology, community development, public policy, or a related field
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills 
  • Demonstrated oral communication and interpersonal skills to convey information in a clear, concise manner, synthesizing information and presenting it in an easy-to-understand way 
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, anti-racism, and anti-oppression via experience in community organizing or capacity building with racialized communities
  • Creative thinking and proven systematic organizational skills to work independently without supervision, determine workload priorities to complete work in a timely manner, and identify and resolve problems
  • Be flexible to work remotely and intend in person in Toronto, Hamilton, or adjacent municipalities if needed
  • Experience working or volunteering in tenant organizing, community organizing, CLT establishment, or related areas 
  • Familiarity with urban planning, city building, and or affordable housing topics
