The Brain Health Imaging Centre (BHIC) is one of the primary research areas of CAMH and focuses on new brain imaging tools and methods used in mental health and addictions for clinical neuroscience research.

Position Description:

The BHIC is seeking a full-time, permanent Manager, PET (Positron Emission Tomography) Systems reporting to the Scientific Director/Chief Radiochemist, Brain Health Imaging Centre. This role will work closely with Radiochemistry teams, PET and MRI Imaging teams, Image Methodology, including scientists, staff, and trainees. The role will include day-to-day operations related to the maintenance and servicing of BHIC medical cyclotrons which routinely produce carbon-11 and fluorine-18, commercial and in-house built automated radiochemistry equipment, radiation safety systems, PET, CT and MRI scanners for both human and preclinical use, with ancillary devices, related imaging equipment for preclinical studies, and associated computer networking infrastructure. The Manager, PET Systems also serves as the backup to the Manager, Engineering Division and will support and provide oversight of PET Systems Engineer(s). The Manager, PET Systems, will manage day-to-day operations and coordinate key initiatives related to the BHIC Engineering Division and provide support for day-to-day tasks. There may be some variability in the work schedule to ensure oversight of Engineering operations and emergency repairs of BHIC equipment and systems. The successful candidate will support a workplace which embraces diversity, encourages teamwork, and complies with all applicable regulatory requirements. In this role you will:
  • Develop, implement, and manage new engineering processes and documentation as needed, for equipment including but not limited to: radiosynthesis modules, cyclotrons, hot cells, radiation monitoring & safety systems, and engineering shop safety.
  • Provide training and support integration of new research trainees, staff, and scientists.
  • Monitor and provide an in-depth review of procedures and documentation for compliance, completeness, and correctness.
  • Ensure maintenance and servicing of BHIC equipment and systems are in accordance with BHIC protocols and in compliance with applicable federal and provincial regulatory requirements, including but not limited to, those under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Perform support, including backup coverage, for day-to-day operations of the Engineering division and related spaces, including preventative maintenance, servicing, and repairs of BHIC equipment and systems.
  • Independently plan and manage small projects, including development and implementation of Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs) for the Engineering Division and related spaces.
  • Adhere to and promote the highest standards of engineering, radiation safety, and workplace practices.
  • Provide support to the Manager, Engineering Division as needed for other initiatives.
This position is located on-site at 250 College Street.
  • Undergraduate degree in applied physics, electrical or mechanical engineering and at least 5 years of experience troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing computer-controlled electro/mechanical equipment related to medical imaging or at least 5 years of relevant experience repairing/maintaining medical imaging or nuclear measurement equipment
  • Knowledge of radiation safety regulations and experience working in a Class II facility is required.
  • Knowledge and experience working in a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) environment, or equivalent, is required.
  • Experience with specialized computer network infrastructure in a research and/or a manufacturing environment is a requirement.
  • Must have a proven track record of ability to identify and articulate risk issues.
  • Candidate will have to prioritize and handle a high volume of diverse projects simultaneously.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills are essential.
  • Ability to communicate and problem-solve with a diverse variety of stakeholders and team members who may have conflicting interests and priorities is required.
  • Bilingualism (French/English) and/or proficiency in a second language is an asset.
Designation as a Nuclear Energy Worker is mandatory for this position and will be arranged for the successful candidate.

Please note: This full-time, permanent position is NOT part of a bargaining unit.
