Health And Safety Manager

Town of Middleton, Canada Elite Employee Ltd Full time

Are you passionate about ensuring the safety and well-being of employees? Do you have extensive knowledge of Health and Safety regulations and a track record of implementing effective safety practices?

Our client is the UK’s largest distributor and installer of Bus, Coach and Rail glass operating over 6 main sites across the UK and Ireland. The business has substantially grown over the last 4 years with current turnover at over £45m, stockholding over £10m and a growing headcount currently at over 300. Health and Safety is the number one priority and in our quest to find the right candidate we would consider that candidate being based at one of our outlying depots in East Kilbride, Alfreton, and Thornbury but our preference is that the right candidate is either based at our Head Office in High Wycombe or at our main distribution centre in Middleton, Manchester.

As Health & Safety Manager, you will be required to manage and advise staff on safety, health and welfare matters, ensuring compliance with statutory obligations whilst also promoting a safety culture across the organisation. Like automotive and truck windscreens, Bus and Coach windscreens have also increased considerably in size and complexity over the years and now very much form part of all new vehicles’ aesthetically pleasing appearance. Glass handling in single units for distribution and installation alongside moving full glass cases in storage has always carried the greatest H&S risks so experience in handling glass would be ideal but experience in handling heavy, awkward and oversized goods is essential.

As the Health & Safety Manager, reporting directly to the Operations Director, your primary responsibility will be to provide expert guidance on all safety, health, and welfare matters. You will work closely with staff at all levels to promote and implement practical and effective methods for maintaining a safe working environment. Your key duties and responsibilities will include the following:

  • Implementing practical and effective methods, both preventative and remedial, to promote health and safety and safe working practices in the workplace.
  • Conducting and organising relevant health and safety training for staff, including first aid and fire safety.
  • Leading the creation of generic risk assessments and, in some cases, specific risk assessments for tasks and activities carried out by PSVG&G employees.
  • Conducting all necessary risk assessments and special assessments for each PSVG&G site, including but not limited to display screen equipment, manual handling, lone working, forklift loading, pregnant workers, and young workers.
  • Arranging specialist assessments, such as fire, legionella, and asbestos, by competent individuals or companies and implementing control measures and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) based on their recommendations.
  • Conducting investigations into accidents and near-miss incidents, recording findings on relevant forms.
  • Advising the Operations Director on all incidents reportable under RIDDOR.
  • Conducting Health and Safety inspections and preparing reports and documents as required.
  • Identifying areas where training and certification are needed to meet legislative standards, Approved Codes of Practice, or HSE (Health and Safety Executive) guidance and arranging necessary training/certification.
  • Keeping up to date with changes in current legislation and implementing relevant changes within the organisation.
  • Immediately reporting any situations to the Directors that, in your professional opinion, require immediate rectification or the cessation of any operation.

Qualifications and Skills requirement

  • Relevant qualifications in Health and Safety management, IOSH, NVQ, NEBOSH. Minimum level 6 / degree and either Chartered Safety Practitioner Status or actively working towards Chartered Status.
  • Demonstrated experience in a similar Health and Safety Management role (ideally in glazing and logistics)
  • In-depth knowledge of Health and Safety regulations, legislation and best practices.
  • Strong ability to develop and implement effective Health and Safety policies and procedures.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to advise and train staff at all levels.
  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities to conduct risk assessments and investigations.
  • A proactive approach to staying updated with changes in legislation and industry standards.
  • Ability to work independently and comfortable making H&S decisions in busy working environment.
  • Proficiency in using relevant software applications for record-keeping and reporting.

Pay and Benefits include:

  • Very Competitive starting salary for the ideal candidate but not less than £60k pa.
  • Tesla Model 3 company car.
  • Company Life Insurance Scheme (Pay-Out at three times your gross salary tax-free to your chosen beneficiary).
  • Company Pension Scheme.
  • Generous Holiday entitlement increases with the length of service after three years.
  • Virtual GP, second opinion and physiotherapy.
  • Employee Assistance Scheme (EAP) available to employees and close family.
  • Private Medical Insurance Scheme.
  • Employee Savings & Discounts.
  • Cycle 2 Work Scheme.
  • Let's Connect Technology Scheme.
  • ULEV Car Scheme for a partner.
  • Workplace ISA Scheme.
  • Eye Care Scheme.

PSVG&G is an equal-opportunity employer. We encourage applications from candidates of all backgrounds and experiences. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for an interview.
