Position Summary

To provide information, education and consultation to breastfeeding clients and their family members, as well as members of health care team.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Supports the World Health Organization/United Nations Children’s Fund statement to protect, promote and support breastfeeding as accepted by the Regional Women and Children Program at Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital
• Provides the training necessary to staff in all areas of the hospital to enable them to support the breastfeeding family with appropriate, consistent information regarding breastfeeding management
• Consults with mothers with special needs regarding breastfeeding, including prematurity, babies with health problems, use of breastfeeding aids, and breastfeeding concerns
• Available for consultation with breastfeeding problems in all areas of the Hospital
• Provides support for breastfeeding mothers after Hospital discharge through a breast feeding clinic and telephone consultations,
• Provides neonatal bilirubin follow ups, tongue tie release and weight checks as required by the program
• Provides formal education sessions for expectant parents including, but not limited to, group classes on the importance of breastfeeding, infant feeding cues, etc.
• Organizes and leads additional education sessions for staff and parents as needed
• Facilitates the continuing support of breastfeeding in the community by ongoing contact with other support groups
• Reviews and evaluates educational materials provided to patients as it relates to breastfeeding
• Initiates and updates policies, procedures and nursing care plans in relation to breastfeeding
• Participates in research studies concerning breastfeeding, which are undertaken by the Hospital
• Attends educational programs pertaining to current information related to breastfeeding
• Functions as a resource for health professionals who are pursuing studies related to breastfeeding and breastfeeding clinics
• Records statistics related to breastfeeding
• Participates and attends regional/provincial Baby Friendly Initiative meetings and brings back learnings to frontline team
• Develops and leads the OSMH Baby Friendly Initiative committee and ensures best practices are instilled in frontline practice and patient/family care
• Assesses and evaluates assistive devices used by breastfeeding mothers
• Provides a liaison with other agencies i.e. SMDHU, V.O.N., Home Care, Midwives, other Hospitals etc.
• Supports caesarean sections with a particular focus upon booked elective caesarean sections by being able to act as scrub/circulating nurse when required

Performs other duties as may be assigned by the direct manager.

Qualifications

• Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) required.
• International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) Certification required.
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) required.
• Current Neonatal Resuscitation Certification required
• Newborn assessment course completion required
• Paediatric Advanced Life Support an asset
• Evidence of continuing education and professional development
• Minimum of two (2) years experience working with newborns in a nursery or combined care unit required.
• Minimum of five (5) years experience working with clients regarding breastfeeding techniques, including prematurity, babies with health concerns, use of breastfeeding aids and breast feeding concerns.
• Preference given to candidates with experience in Labour and Delivery, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit experience and those who have successfully completed the Neonatal Intensive Care Course.
• Basic knowledge of high risk obstetrics - antepartum/labour assessments considered an asset.
• Fetal Monitoring Certificate and/or advanced knowledge and experience is considered an asset.
• Experience and knowledge to support the Special Care Nursery and the Paediatric Unit is considered an asset.
• Recent experience teaching breastfeeding/prenatal education in a group setting
• Demonstrated computer literacy with some advanced computer skills.
• Demonstrated strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
• Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize and multi task efficiently.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and work in a highly professional manner.
• Demonstrated ability to educate, facilitate and present information clearly and precisely.
• Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
• Commitment to providing high quality, individualized patient care.
• Ability to make intelligent, independent decisions and initiate appropriate action based on patient-focused best practice guidelines.
• Demonstrates commitment to continued professional and personal growth and development through Continuing Education Programs and Self Directed Learning Opportunities.
