Edmonton’s Downtown is located on Treaty Six Territory and on the traditional homelands of the Metis Nation of Alberta.

 

The EDBA’s work is carried out through many avenues, like delivering Downtown beautification and cleaning services, advocating to all orders of government, creating and supporting public events across Downtown, and promoting and supporting Downtown businesses.

 

We focus and prioritize our work based on the following strategic priorities:

 

o  Serving as the leading voice and convening force in Downtown recovery

o  Ensuring the Downtown community is active in solutions to systemic social issues

o  Generating continuous service value for members

o  Creating and promoting a remarkable, attractive Downtown experience

 

The Position

The Director, Marketing & Communications plays a vital role on our leadership team and works alongside the Chief Executive Officer and the two other directors (Director, Operations and Director, Finance & Administration) to lead the organization and the work that we do on behalf of our members.

 

The work of the Director, Marketing & Communications ultimately shapes the brand and story of the EDBA and of Downtown Edmonton through all earned, paid, and owned marketing and communications channels. This individual is responsible for the development and implementation of the marketing & communications strategy for the organization, which includes managing the internal team and external partners to deliver on high-impact work that includes advertising campaigns, signature programs like Downtown Dining Week, and our large-scale signature events in public spaces, Downtown Spark and Downtown Winterval.

 

What You’ll Do

  • Build and implement a marketing & communications strategy that aligns with the EDBA’s overall Strategic Plan and guides all marketing & communications activities
  • Develop and lead the execution of various marketing and communications programs, tactics and activities that ensure the EDBA’s members and partners are up to date on our programs, services, and advocacy efforts, and to attract the public to want to visit, work, invest, & live downtown
  • Oversee the EDBA’s organizational brand and the Edmonton Downtown place brand and how the brands are expressed and perceived
  • Manage all media relations for the organization, including prompt responses to media requests, proactive and strategic media pitches, drafting news releases and coordinating media availabilities, crafting public statements and key messages
  • Lead the marketing team’s work by aligning advertising campaigns, social content, and other activities with the Marketing & Communications Strategy
  • Work with the CEO and event operations teams to strategically attract and secure sponsors for signature events and programs
  • Provide creative and strategic oversight and other support as required for the development and execution of all EDBA signature events, including Downtown Dining Week, Downtown Spark, and Downtown Winterval
  • Implement measurable departmental performance metrics tied to the EDBA’s Strategic Plan and Marketing & Communications Strategy
  • Where required, write and/or edit copy for creative campaigns, corporate communications pieces (e.g., Annual Report) and other communications activities
  • Collaboratively develop and proactively manage the budgets for the Marketing & Communications department
  • Seek out and develop new and innovative partnerships that help us deliver value to EDBA members and deliver on our strategic priorities
  • Manage the marketing and some operational aspects of the Edmonton Downtown Gift Card program

 

What You’ll Need

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in marketing, communications, event management, arts & cultural management, or general business
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a Marketing & Communications Manager or Director role, an Account Manager or Account Director role at an advertising agency, or a similar senior role in a marketing & communications capacity
  • Experience managing a team
  • Experience being responsible for campaign and event budgets over $100,000
  • Exceptionally strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Well-developed leadership skills and competencies
  • Strong familiarity with Wordpress and other web platforms, the Google and Meta ecosystem, digital marketing trends and best practices
  • Relationships in the Edmonton media and journalist community will be considered an asset
