Health Sciences North (HSN) is seeking an innovative individual for the position of Occupational Therapist to offer a full continuum of prevention, rehabilitation and health care services under the HSN Specialty Clinics (Upper and Lower Extremity Injuries, Back and Neck, Prosthetic and Amputees and Gloves,) to individuals and third party sources, which include the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB), insurers and employers.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the College of Occupational Therapists. However, candidates expected to obtain registration in the next few months and recent graduates are strongly encouraged to apply. Unilingual candidates are also encouraged to apply.

We are looking for someone with a minimum of six (6) months’ experience in assessing and treating individuals with musculoskeletal injuries, who have been injured at work or in motor vehicle accidents and those with age-related functional impairments. Minimum of six (6) months’ experience working with people who have severe and persistent physical and/or mental illness. Seeking a candidate with experience working in / with the private health care sector (e.g. WSIB, auto insurance). Candidates that possess training or recent experience with facilitating adult learning in a formal setting are preferred.

REHABILITATION PROFESSIONALS INCENTIVE GRANT

The incentive grant program offers taxable incentive grants of up to $5,000 per eligible year, to a maximum of $15,000 paid over a three-year period to audiologists, chiropodists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech language pathologists who establish their practice in Northern Ontario and accept full-time positions which are fully funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) and which are approved by the Northern Health Programs (NHP).

REPORTING: Under the general direction of the Coordinator, Rehabilitation Business Development.

DUTIES:

  • Administer and perform comprehensive assessments (physical, cognitive and functional) and utilize outcome measures.
  • Analyze and interpret assessment findings and results of outcome measures.
  • Generate, implement, evaluate, and modify treatment plans on an individual or group basis within the outpatient or community setting.
  • Recommend and educate compensatory and remedial strategies, activity modification, adaptive equipment, and assistive devices to promote safety and maximize functional independence.
  • Recommend, dispense, fabricate, or modify clinical equipment, including driving aids, splints, gloves, and orthotics.
  • Implement strategies to address client safety issues and mitigate risk for critical injury and death.
  • Educate client and family in coping strategies, decision-making, and utilization of personal and community resources, and make referrals to community resources as required.
  • Oversee work hardening activities to increase functional performance at home and work.
  • Collaborate with clients, families, interprofessional team members, and community partners throughout the therapy process and advocate to ensure client needs are met.
  • Participate in the discharge planning process to ensure safe, effective, and efficient discharges.
  • Develop and implement recommendations to facilitate return to work and/or activities of normal living.
  • Document assessment findings, analysis, treatment plans, client goals, client’s ongoing progress, effectiveness of treatment plan, and government/insurance/legal forms according to the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO) standards and HSN policy.
  • Research and incorporate best evidence into clinical practice, and conduct or collaborate in research.
  • Liase with third party sources regarding assessment, treatment, and return to work recommendations.
  • Educate and provide internships to student Occupational Therapists (OT)/Occupational Therapist Assistants (OTA)/Physiotherapist Assistants (PTA), other members of an interprofessional health care team and their students, external health care professionals, and school/community staff/agencies.
  • Ensure the privacy and confidentiality of personal health information is maintained.
  • Maintain the safety of the client, OT, and other staff.
  • Recommend, manage, and maintain inventory, and order essential supplies and equipment as required.
  • Maintain relevant statistical information.
  • Follow service-specific, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Infection Prevention and Control practices, including monthly workplace inspections.
  • Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  • Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
  • Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the workplace.
  • Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety and Occupational Therapy practice legislation, standards and guidelines.
  • Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

  • Current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the COTO.
  • Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of six (6) months’ experience in assessing and treating individuals with musculoskeletal injuries who have been injured at work or in motor vehicle accidents and those with age-related functional impairments.
  • Minimum of six (6) months’ experience working with people who have severe and persistent physical and/or mental illness.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of typical and atypical anatomy/neuroanatomy, physiology/neurophysiology, and social sciences (e.g. psychology, sociology, and education).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the impact of atypical development on function to inform Occupational Therapy Service in the treatment of disease and conditions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with third party sources.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability in the assessment and treatment of individuals with musculoskeletal injuries and chronic pain, injured at work or in a motor vehicle accident.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Occupational Therapy theory, techniques, other theoretical frameworks relevant to the area of practice, and the Canadian Practice Process Framework (CPPF).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of client and family-centred models of care.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of COTO standards of practice and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current health care and privacy legislation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based clinical practice and best practice.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of outcome measures and research process/methodology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community services and available resources.

  • Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software, (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
  • Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
