Staff Backend Engineer – Payments & BillingJoin Scribd, Inc. to lead architecture and build scalable payment systems that power our subscription revenue engine.What You’ll DoArchitect and implement global billing, invoicing and reconciliation services for a multi‑product platform.Design backend services that process payments at scale, integrating with Stripe, Adyen, Braintree and other providers.Ensure security and compliance with PCI DSS, tokenization and encryption across financial flows.Drive observability and reliability—define SLOs, build metrics, alerts, and lead incident response.Modernize legacy systems, reduce technical debt, and mentor engineering teams.Collaborate cross‑functionally with Product, Finance, Risk, Platform, and Analytics to solve complex business problems.We’re Looking For Someone WhoHas 8+ years of backend engineering experience, especially with distributed systems in aerospace, finance or payment domains.Demonstrates strong data modeling, transactional consistency, and expertise in MySQL/PostgreSQL; familiarity with NoSQL and caching is a plus.Speaks at least one modern backend language—Ruby (preferred), Java, Go or Python—and writes clean, secure code.Has a track record of technical leadership: setting architecture direction, mentoring engineers, and driving large‑scale migrations or modernizations.Is proficient in observability and reliability practices—defining SLOs, implementing metrics/alerts, debugging distributed systems, and incident response.Communicates clearly across product and engineering stakeholders and influences technical and business decisions.It’s a Plus If YouHave deep experience designing and operating payment or billing systems.Have integrated with major payment service providers and managed multi‑currency or local payment methods.Have led large‑scale provider migrations with minimal customer impact.Have knowledge of compliance and security standards such as PCI DSS, encryption and tokenization.Understand fraud prevention strategies and have experience detecting and preventing abuse.CompensationThe base pay is part of a total compensation package that varies by geography. For San Francisco, the target range is $167,000–$260,500. For other U.S. markets it ranges from $137,500–$247,500. In Canada it ranges from $175,000–$231,500 CAD.
