The Senior Indigenous Relations and Policy Lead is the sole branch expert on matters with respect to Indigenous affairs, including the Province’s aspirations and legal duties under the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act and various court decisions. This position is also an expert on Provincial priorities with respect to reconciliation with Indigenous people as they relate to clean energy and climate action. The position provides strategic advice to Ministry executive and Cabinet, as well as senior leaders of agencies such as BC Hydro and other public utilities, the BC Utilities Commission, Indigenous Nations and organizations and stakeholder organizations.

The Senior Indigenous Relations and Policy Lead also leads or contributes to the development of ground-breaking provincial policy, legislation or negotiating mandates to advance Government’s objectives related to clean energy, climate action, and Indigenous reconciliation by leading or participating on internal working groups, or assigned components or elements of initiatives, while using sound public policy practices and methods for achieving desired outcomes.

Job Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from a university of recognized standing in Indigenous Relations, Law, Public Administration, Business Administration, or Economics.
  • An equivalent combination of education and *related experience may be considered.

4 Years*related experience, which may include all of the following:

  • Applying provincial legislation, policies and initiatives related to provincial priorities around reconciliation with Indigenous people.
  • Applying conflict resolution approaches, principles, and theories, including interest-based negotiation techniques.
  • Developing strategic policy in a public sector setting, including developing and communicating advice and recommendations for executive and Cabinet decision makers.
  • Managing multiple projects and assignments within tight time constraints and with limited resources
  • Leading multi-disciplinary teams and providing direction to direct reports or contractors.

Preference may be given to applicants with one or more of the following:

  • Master’s degree from a university of recognized standing in Indigenous Relations, Law, Public Administration, Business Administration, or Economics
  • Experience leading engagements with Indigenous Nations or Indigenous organizations to seek joint agreement on complex issues that require balancing competing interests.
  • Experience with clean energy or climate policy, public utility regulation, or administration of public natural resource management frameworks, or
    4 years' Experience in the clean energy sectors (electricity, renewable natural gas, hydrogen or biofuels), or
  • Experience developing and maintaining effective, trust-based relationships with Indigenous peoples.
