WHERE YOU COME IN

We are looking for a Data Governance Manager to join our team at Make-A-Wish Canada. Reporting to the Director of Business Applications, you will develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive data governance strategy, and collaborate with stakeholders to ensure compliance and help inform decision making. This role can be based in any Make-A-Wish Canada office and is a full-time, permanent, hybrid position.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Develop, implement and maintain a comprehensive data governance strategy and framework, including policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Ensure alignment of data governance initiatives with organizational goals.
  • Monitor and enhance data quality and integrity, implementing controls, metrics and reporting mechanisms.
  • Identify and support the resolution of data quality issues with corrective actions.
  • Ensure data security and compliance with regulations, developing and enforcing access and usage policies.
  • Conduct regular audits to maintain compliance with data governance policies.
  • Collaborate with data stewards, IT, and business units to promote data governance best practices and facilitate stakeholder communication.
  • Provide training and support on data governance policies and procedures to ensure that all employees understand and adhere to data governance policies.
  • Develop change management strategies to support user adoption and compliance to policies.
  • Oversee data management initiatives, including classification, metadata, and lifecycle management, while maintaining data stewardship programs.
  • Support senior technology leadership with developing and executing strategies to manage MAWC’s data assets, ensuring they are used to support strategic decision-making.
  • Ensure proper documentation and maintenance of data assets.
  • Keep abreast of data governance trends, identify areas for improvement, and implement enhancements.
  • Lead data governance projects and initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • University degree in Information Management, Computer Science, Business Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in data governance, data management, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of data governance frameworks, policies, and best practices.
  • In-depth understanding of legal and compliancy requirements applicable to Canadian charities including Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) tax receipting requirements, federal and provincial privacy laws, consent, health information management and digital communications laws.
  • Experience with data quality management and data security practices.
  • Experience leading change management initiatives including delivery of training to business users.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Data Management Professional, Data Governance and Stewardship Professional) are an asset.
  • A clear Criminal Background Check will be required.

YOUR WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Hybrid work environment (2 days in-office, 3 days remote per week) with occasional requirement to work outside of traditional office hours.
  • Occasional day and/or overnight travel.

Physical/Mental Effort

  • Work under pressure of tight deadlines, with a high-volume workload, and with multiple demands & changing priorities.
