A Day in the Life of a Director of Architectural Design:

In this dynamic role, you will oversee a variety of product offerings, each tailored to meet diverse market demands and consumer preferences. You will be responsible for creating realistic, innovative, and next-level renderings that not only capture the essence of our design philosophy but also set new standards in residential architecture in the Calgary market.

The Director of Architectural Design will be crucial in ensuring that Nostalgia Townlet becomes a benchmark for innovative, high-quality residential living. You will leverage your technical skills and high degree of creativity to ensure that every design is visually stunning while maintaining budgetary and regulatory obligations. Your ability to pre-plan all streetscapes and individual homes to exacting standards will ensure that each home contributes to the appeal and promise of the community. Your vision and leadership will guide our design efforts, ensuring that every home is a testament to excellence in architecture and design.

The Director of Architectural Design is a one-of-a-kind thinker who is extremely dedicated, focused, and passionate about residential community design. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a once-in-a-lifetime community project, where your contributions will leave a lasting impact on the landscape of Nostalgia Townlet.

Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Vision:
    • Meticulously plan and design streetscapes and architectural controls and elevations to ensure consistency, quality, and adherence to our vision, paying special attention to corner homesites, terminating vistas and any other critical elevations.
    • Provide leadership and vision to the design team through the development of design guidelines, master plans, and placemaking initiatives.
    • Develop and communicate design strategies that align with the company's goals and objectives.
    • Provide creative leadership that aligns with the master plan for all residential projects, guiding them through all phases from concept to completion.
    • Lead and mentor Junior and Intermediate Architectural Designers and other direct reports.
  • Design & Technical Expertise:
    • Produce high-quality, visually compelling renderings that are realistic, creative and next-level, to push the boundaries of traditional architectural design.
    • Review and approve building partner designs to ensure alignment with design guidelines and master plans.
    • Review and approve onsite mockups to ensure compliance with original design intent.
    • Produce realistic 3D renderings/building models and assist in the design of complex streetscapes.
    • Serve as a technical resource to solve design-related challenges throughout project construction.
  • Team & Project Management:
    • Recruit and cultivate a community-based design team as required.
    • Oversee external consultants: architects, designers, and other design professionals as required.
    • Manage and lead innovation in product search and design to maintain industry leadership.
  • Product Development:
    • Utilize your deep knowledge and technical expertise to develop a diverse range of elevation and home model designs that cater to different market segments and consumer needs, ensuring a variety of product offering.
    • Apply your creative talents to develop unique and inspiring designs that stand out in the market.
  • Operational Support:
    • Collaborate closely with other Nostalgia Townlet team members from different areas of the business, including Sales, Land Development, Construction, Purchasing, Marketing, and Finance.
    • Understand and anticipate consumer trends, demands, and opportunities.
    • Work with divisions and show home merchandisers on interior selections, upgrades, and themes for new show homes.
  • Market Intelligence:
    • Stay informed on competitor and market trends, design trends, and customer feedback.
    • Conduct quarterly market research and analysis.
    • Ensure designs adhere to industry best practices, local building codes, and sustainability standards.
  • Strategic Planning:
    • Participate in the company’s annual strategic planning and business plans.
    • As a member of the senior management team, contribute to the formation of overall business strategies for the company.

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Architecture, Design, or a related field.
    • Diploma or Degree in related architectural technology program.
    • Professional licensure as an architect is a benefit.
    • Successful completion of a recognized Executive Development Program and/or professional designation.
  • Experience:
    • 15 years’ experience as a residential home designer with a proven record of designing innovative new homes to satisfy market demand.
    • 15 years’ experience in New Home Construction and Architectural Design.
    • Demonstrated history of residential design innovation and success.
    • Proven track record of managing people for results.
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency in architectural software such as AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, Lumion, and Microsoft Dynamics CRM.
    • Strong negotiating skills and experience with trades, suppliers, and manufacturers.
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and in a public speaking setting.
    • Excellent presentation skills.
    • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
    • High level of creativity and ability to provide a portfolio of new home plans.
    • Proven ability to organize, direct, assess, coach, and mentor a team.
