Environmental Resources Management (ERM) is a leading global provider of environmental, health, safety, risk, and social consulting services. We are currently seeking an outstanding Environmental Assessment and/or Permitting Consultant to join our Canadian regulatory and permitting team. This position would ideally be based in one of our Canadian offices (e.g., Vancouver, Smithers, Whitehorse, Calgary, Saskatoon, or Toronto), but would allow for flexibility and remote work from other locations. Applicants in other locations in Canada will also be considered.

The role requires experience in the infrastructure or natural resource development sector—particularly in the renewable energy, transportation, oil and gas, or mining sectors—combined with a demonstrated understanding of applicable provincial/territorial and federal regulatory and permitting requirements. The ideal candidate will have proven experience in British Columbia, Alberta, and/or Ontario provincial permitting and impact assessment processes. The successful candidate will join ERM Canada’s regulatory and permitting team and will be connected with ERM’s global team of environmental and social experts.

This posting is designed for a resourceful, motivated person with experience and skills in environmental assessment and/or permitting, and large-application coordination, who enjoys problem-solving and leading teams within a challenging and fast-paced multi-stakeholder environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide input, advice and guidance on a variety of regulatory, permitting, environmental impact assessment tasks in support of clients’ projects.
  • Assist project managers, provide project coordination, or project management skills to execute scope/budget/schedule to meet client’s expectations, and ensure quality standards and regulatory requirements are fulfilled on project deliverables.
  • Support engagement activities with communities and stakeholders as part of the project design and regulatory process.
  • Lead and support delivery activities such as impact assessment scoping, regulatory process coordination, permit application scoping, application information requirements, technical writing, data and regulatory research and review, collection and integration of input from ERM’s subject matter experts.
  • Support development of environmental management plans, delegating work requests to GIS, data compilation and desktop publishing assignments to support permit applications, and development of recommendations for clients.
  • Support and contribute to business development and marketing activities in the company through conducting research on client needs, preparing marketing materials, and participating in proposal preparation.
  • Build strong collaborative relationships with other ERM employees worldwide.
  • Think critically and strategically, helping to influence the impact of our work within our team, and positive outcomes for our clients.

QUALIFICATIONS & DESIRABLE SKILLS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, biology, environmental engineering, or related field. Or the equivalency of 8+ years related experience in lieu of education.
  • 5 to 7 years of experience in the resource development industry or environmental consulting.
  • Understanding of environmental and social effects related to mining, oil and gas, renewable energy, transportation, and/or related developments.
  • Understanding of regulatory and permitting requirements and compliance management as they relate to mining, oil and gas, renewable energy, and transportation projects.
  • Expertise and experience with Canadian federal, provincial and territorial regulations and guidelines (in particular, familiarity with environmental assessment and permitting processes in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Yukon, Northwest Territories and/or Nunavut) or similar legislation in other jurisdictions.
  • Familiarity with field program scoping to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to both work as part of a team and be a self-starter when required.
  • Excellent writing, communication, organization, attention to detail, and time management skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and awareness or familiarity with project management tools.
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in a demanding work environment.
  • Demonstrate a growth mindset and keen interest and ability to learn new skills and knowledge, applying and integrating on an ongoing basis.
  • Collaborate naturally, are dependable and flexible.
  • English is required, and fluency in multiple languages (e.g., Indigenous languages, French) is an asset.
  • Strong commitment to safety, including following established health and safety protocols.
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusiveness in the workplace.
  • Prior experience in environmental project management, environmental consulting, industry or government is an asset.
  • Experience with Indigenous groups, particularly in the context of regulatory processes is an asset.
  • Proven experience in British Columbia, Alberta or Ontario provincial permitting and impact assessment processes is an asset.
  • Experience or exposure to environmental compliance monitoring, notifications, and support for operational-phase permitting in Ontario is an asset.
  • Experience with community and stakeholder engagement is an asset.
