Primary function

This position will provide legal representation and advice to immigrants, migrants and refugees, in and around Ottawa and the Eastern District, before all Divisions of the Immigration and Refugee Board, in applications to IRCC and CBSA, as well as in matters before the Federal Courts. This person should have significant experience working with vulnerable individuals and demonstrate empathy towards persons with precarious immigration status and a commitment to migrant justice.
The ideal candidate is able to work co-operatively with other staff in a high pressure but supportive team based environment. The individual should demonstrate empathy towards, and a commitment to, immigrants and refugees, and be able to assume a varied and complex immigration caseload.

Key accountabilities
  1. Legal Representation
    • Represent clients before all divisions of the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB)
    • Handle Pre-Removal Risk Assessments (PRRAs), humanitarian and compassionate (H&Cs) applications, and deferrals with CBSA and IRCC
    • Represent clients in Federal Court, including complex test case litigation and motions seeking stays of removal
    • Represent clients in immigration detention, including detention reviews and related Federal and Superior Court matters
  2. Community and Legal Education
    • Present information about LAO immigration services and refugee law to legal and refugee communities
    • Provide brief services and general summary legal advice to duty counsel clients
    • Participate in legal education initiatives
  3. Additional Duties
    • Perform other duties as assigned
Required skills & experience
  1. Professional Qualifications
    • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  2. Experience
    • Multiple years of experience in complex refugee and immigration law, including appellate matters
    • Demonstrated fluency in both English and French
  3. Commitment and Sensitivity
    • Strong commitment to assisting vulnerable individuals with precarious immigration status and related marginalization
    • Sensitivity towards individuals with mental health and addiction issues
  4. Skills
    • Ability to work independently and unsupervised in a fast-paced environment
    • Effective collaboration and teamwork with colleagues and stakeholders
    • Willingness and ability to travel within the Eastern district as needed
