POSITION SUMMARY Under the general supervision of the Sport Development Coordinator, is responsible for providing on‑site leadership and supervision to staff teams working in various City recreation facilities which includes assessing compliance to applicable legislation and municipal by‑laws, health and safety and work performance. The coordination of day‑to‑day operations and assignment of work is also an integral part of the position. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES Responsible for assisting in on‑site supervision of staff including the provision of technical direction, monitoring performance, coaching/mentoring, health & safety compliance, and risk assessment. Liaises with user groups and monitors rentals. Serves as on‑site contact and facilitates requests. Participates in assignment of staff, equipment and materials as required ensuring effective utilization within the Section. Assists with training and scheduling part‑time staff working at City community centres and sport facilities including arenas, stadia and events. Performs public relations role in absence of full‑time staff. Handles inquiries and complaints. Opens and closes facilities as per procedures. Monitors facility for user need, suspicious behaviour, and general cleanliness and responds accordingly. Responds to the need for assistance in all Service areas including responding to emergencies and coordination of facility during emergency situations and evacuations. Administers first aid as required and completes required paperwork and reports in a timely manner. Performs cash control procedures and ensures all reports and cash receipts are balanced. Verifies cash deposits; prepares cash pick‑up and receives coin delivery as needed. Ensures adequate staffing, monitors shift changes and plans work for staff. Performs event inspections to ensure compliance with terms of Special Event License and street closure permit. Performs duties of Facility Attendant, Event Attendant, Ice Patrol and Special Events Officer as required. Supports the review of certificates of insurance provided by facility renters. Updates the event sections of the City of Thunder Bay website and updates/monitors social media channels. Updates various contact databases. Attends meetings as required and presents and reports as needed. Performs such other related duties as may be required. QUALIFICATIONS Education / Experience Post‑secondary education in a related field such as recreation, event, sport management, tourism, human services, social sciences or public or business administration Previous experience in special events and sport administration and working with the community and volunteer organizations would be preferred Previous supervisory experience Skills / Abilities Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing Excellent project/time management, analytical/critical thinking, problem solving, and decision‑making skills Must have good customer service and communication skills and be courteous and tactful in dealing with the public. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with Administration, superiors, co‑workers, employees and the general public Must possess the ability to provide direction and enforce Corporate Policies with staff in a tactful and effective manner Proven conflict management abilities and mediation skills Ability to work independently and as a member of a team Must be at basic skill level in word processing and spreadsheet software Must possess and maintain a valid Class “G” Ontario Driver’s Licence, or equivalent Must meet the definition of a competent driver as defined by the Corporation Must be competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health and Safety Act as amended Assets Knowledge of events and sports sectors is preferred CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Will be required to travel to various work locations and provide own transportation Must have a Standard First Aid and Level C C.P.R. and AED Certificate Irregular work hours, including weekdays, evenings and weekends, are required Must undergo a successful Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC) Must remain a competent driver as defined by the Corporation May be required to provide a successful driver’s record (uncertified) GENERAL INFORMATION As an equal opportunity employer, the City of Thunder Bay encourages applications from Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, members of visible minority groups, women and members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
